Budget - As little as I can get away with but with a good tone, around £600, £700 at a push

Genres- Literally everything apart from metal. In my band we play punk, foo fighters, guns n roses, lynyrd skynyrd, oasis. Mostly rock.

New or used - Not fussed as long as it's in good condition

Home or gig - Mainly gig and practice for the gigs

Closest city - Lincoln, UK

Current gear - At the moment I'm using a solid state marshall combo, MG250DFX, does the job okay but wouldn't mind an upgrade, got that one cheap

Marshall DSL50 head, and the cab of your choice. If you ever want to do metal it'll pull it off quite nicely as well. It's a very versatile head, one of my personal favorites.

If you're really trying to do this on the cheap, what about one of the Orange Micro Terrors into a used 4x12? (Since you said you weren't playing metal...)

100 watts is far too much IMO. I have a 15 watt tube amp (EL84s) that easily goes over drums (i've had turn it down complaints) might not be great for bigger gigs, but for bars etc, 15+ would do you good. Keep in mind, tube amps sound best when close to full volume. At least for overdrive.

So much misinformation here, too bad I don't have time to pick it apart. In short I'll say amps have a volume knob for a reason.

1) You must be playing with the quietist drummer in the world.

2) You must not have any clean head room??

We I rehears with my band (without being mic’d through the P.A) I have my 36' coupe running about 1/2. and I’m barely keeping up with my drummer then!!

thomann has good deals on the jet city stuff. though the heads aren't in stock at the moment. Hard to beat for the price (assuming they get the heads back in).

Well, you CAN get over the drums with an Orange TT or a Vox AC15. You just will be crunchy as all get out. It will not resemble anything clean, at that point. I suppose it also depends on the room and the drummer, but I got over drums at an open mike night with my input volume on 3'oclock and my master volume on 12'oclock. If you want to have audible cleans, you probably will want 30 watts. The DSL50 sounds good for you. Try an Egnater Renegade though. I stand by those as a reasonably priced amp with enough tone, features, and volume for most styles and gigs.

you don't need to crank it to it's full 100 watts. most bigger amps like that are used so that the power amp won't distort. ignore volume knobs to your detriment

also, 100 watts would only be ~1.8 times louder than a 15 watt if you hold cabs/speakers constant. mind you, this is running both amps at their full nominal output, which you usually don't need to do.

what works for you may not work for him. mind you, he is playing mostly rock and some nice power amp distortion can come in handy, but choosing an amp that small does position him so he has no real option for any headroom. that can be a problem if he wants some crisp clean tones.

this is a common opinion... but it is just that: an opinion. many experienced players on this forum think quite differently. i would say how loud you should run your amp to sound good is based on: hearing perception, personal preference, and design of the amp. many very high dollar metal amps sound quite good at low volumes (and yes i am talking about OD/distortion tones).

Sorry about the link, it basically consisted of the Bugera 333XL Infinium, although I don't know what difference the XL makes as I don't play metal

The Bugera 333 is a clone of the Peavey XXX, the 333xl is a clone of the Peavey JSX.

I have a 333 head, and they do sound good, but they are made very cheap and lots of people have trouble with reliability. Now I have only had a few minor problems (input jack broke) so I count my self lucky.

Its your money so do what you want just take the horror storys in account as facts when choosing.

if you are getting a bugera, i'd get from somewhere with a decent warranty- thomann is 3 years. DV247 (do they stock bugera? ) has a 4 year warranty.

i wouldn't pay extra for it, kind of thing. both dv and thomann do the extra warranty (granted, not 5 years, but not far off) for free.

the VK is alright. it's a budget option, though- and in the UK, it's not *that* cheap, not to mention there are other EU/UK options which aren't much more which are way better (e.g. traynor ycv50b on thomann, jet cities on thomann, etc.)
