So, I'm opening yet another "What Amp" thread, since I'm obviously in a hunt of an amp.

Let me start of by saying that I own Vox VT30, and the idea is to run two amps at the same time with an ABY switch. Vox VT30 is fine, but I got one of those faulty models with volume spike at channel change. Therefore I'm in a need of an amp that:

- has a great clean
- has a darker tone/sound
- takes pedals well
- is loud enough for most gig situations (I'm told that nowadays PA takes care of everything and even like 15W tube amps are good enough for small-medium gigs)
- would prefer a SS (so that I won't have to deal with tubes), but I know tubes are so much better...

Budget? - Let's say around 400€, which is around 520 US dollars. Am willing to save up, of course, but the lower price the better. Though quality > money.

Genres? - Post-Rock, Shoegaze, Progressive Rock, Indie, Post-Metal, Experimental... Hude array of genres.

New or Used? - Doesn't matter. Used is better for my wallet though.

Home or Gig? - VT30 is enough for practice I guess, but let's say I want one that'll work in both situations.

Closest City? - I'm from Slovenia, so this info won't tell you much.

Current Gear? - Epiphone Les Paul standard, Vox VT30, Boss ME-50, Way Huge Swollen Pickle, Ibanez DE-7, Boss HM-3, Boss SD-2. I'm currently in process getting myself a reverb (I'm hunting down Hardwire RV-7) and another delay.

Thanks!

Could you find a used Fender Deluxe Reverb?

your pedals will take care of the dirt.

really, any Fender with a drive can do shoegaze and indie.

Thanks, I'll be definitely on a lookout for one, though they seem to be out of my price range (the cheapest used being around 900 euros).

If you play shoegaze, that amp is the shit. with a fulltone OCD pedal, a delay, the built in reverb, and something else like an octave of your choice it's great.

What fenders are available? Someone else help me out here...

What about Fender HOT ROD Deluxe III? One is available here with Fender hot rod deluxe extension cabinet for 650 eur (app. 850 dollars).

I like my vox vt, but I love my Egnater Rebel. IMO if you're not a metal guy the Rebel is the best amp near that price range.

I had a DeVille which is basically the same amp. It takes pedals quite well but the overdrive channel is (best way I saw it put was by Cathbard) an abomination.

with a good dirt pedal and a good overdrive (which you have) you're all set. Take your pedalboard and guitar and try it out first.

The Hot Rod is great for a budget pedal platform. And with the availability in your region, I'd say it's your best bet.

Thanks guys! I'll try it out and see if I can get the guy to lower the price a little.

If I read the quote underneath correctly, it's 650 for the actual amplifier AND the extension cab? I'd grab it for 650, to be honest.

Oh snap, missed that. yes! Get that, it's perfect. Later on, a Fulltone OCD or a Zendrive will get you even better drive tones.

Wow I've missed a lot in posts today...I'm sleepy. night UG

I'm gonna go ahead and suggest the Jazz Chorus because it's exactly everything OP is asking for, down to the fact that it's solid state. It's got one of the best clean channels money can buy and it's a pretty damn solid platform for pedals.

The Jet City JCA20 works pretty well for dark drive sounds with a Swollen Pickle though it's not super-clean.

note, you don't really need the extension cab if you're buying a combo.

Used Jazz Chorus 50W is available for 250 euros (324 dollars) and JC-120 is available for 700 euros (910 dollars). There is also new The Jet City JCA20H available for 333 euros (430 dollars). I guess I'll try playing on all of them and see which one I like the best.

If he's playing shoegaze/post rock he'll need something that takes pedals,
I've heard JC's aren't the best for this purpose

Apparently he is only selling the combo, he made a mistake in creating his ad.

And yeah, I've also read that JCs don't take pedals well. And more than a really superb clean I need an amp that's gonna have no problems at taking pedals.

JC's take pedals fine - as long as that pedal isn't a boost trying to coax distortion out of it. If you are using pedals to actually generate the distortion then they work fine and mod/time effects work perfectly on them. Whoever wrote what you read suffers from a serious case of the wrongs.

A big Fender tube amp is the way I'd go though. The HRD is a decent enough choice as long as you stay on the clean channel and use pedals for everything.

Just found used Fender Hot Rod Deville 2x12 for like 550 dollars. I think that's my new amp.

Go for it dude, it'll serve you well. just stay far away from the drive channel (unless you modify it).

Good amp, really! I liked a lot the one I tried, it worked like wonders with a TS9 and a Big Muff.
