Just a thread for discussing one of the most recognizable video game characters.

Did/do you like Sonic games? If so, which ones?

I was a pretty big fan when I was younger. Although in my opinion, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for Gamecube was the last good full-on Sonic game. All the others after that were mediocre to pretty bad. I've heard they've gotten better in the past couple years though (although they got pretty bad for a while). Also, most of the handheld games are pretty good, although they typically get redundant, though. If you play one, you've played them all.

Favorite game would have to be Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles on Sega Genesis. And another which is a spin-off is Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Easily one of the most underrated games I've ever played.

Played that shit on Sega at my grandparents' house.

The first four games (Sonic the Hedgehog-Sonic & Knuckles) are really good.

I have Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog, which in my opinion are mediocre. They're not awful like people say but they aren't that great either. I probably only think that because I was young when I played them though.

I never played either of the Adventure games but I've meant to for some time now.

Edit: I only ever played the first two on the Genesis though. The rest I played through the 'mega collection' on the PS2. Mean Bean Machine is not underrated.

Oh for sure. While Adventure 2 had some amazing Sonic and Shadow levels, there wasn't enough and too much Tails, Eggman, Knuckles and Rouge levels.

trufax. SA2 is good, but it's not THAT good. And they went steeply downhill after that. Heroes wasn't awful, but it was a far cry from Adventure. Shadow was pretty bad. And let's not even bring up Sonic 2006.

He's bouncing back though. Generations and Colors were both decent.

Yeah I stopped getting the console games after SA2. The reviews were always shit so I didn't bother.

The GBA games were decent. Sonic Battle was was pretty awesome.

But for awhile Sonic was my idol and all I did was play the genesis games. Sonic 3 and Knuckles was just greatest thing.

Edit:
Forgot about Sonic Heroes. That's he last game I got.

Great gameplay. Shit plot and voice acting.

I forgot about that. Most of that wasn't even a real game, just running around the town. That was the most recent Sonic game I played.

Sonic Heroes was really meh, Shadow was a decent game but was SUPER hard, Sonic Unleashed wasn't bad but was so disappointing that it ruined it anyway.

But yeah, 1-3, S&K, Adventure 1 and 2, and Spinball are amazing games.

I actually got Colors. To be honest, it was alright, not bad at all, but I couldn't really get into it. I hate how the enemy design is all happy and colorful, as opposed to the realistic looking black and gray machines in SA2.

I've been meaning to get Generations for the 3DS. I'd like to see the 3D graphics, as Sonic tends to have gorgeous graphics no matter how bad the game.

Wow, I remember this battery drainer.

I'm a late 90's kid but my fathers much much younger brother had one when I was real young, that is one heavy hand held.

It's a collection of bugs that loosely resembles a game.

Spinball is one of the most ball-crushingly difficult games out there. It will shit inside your soul. And that's why it's awesome.

Shadow wasn't bad, it was just unnecessarily hard.

I can't believe this game happened.

Also, this is my all-time favorite track from Sonic games. Sonic Adventure has IMO one of the best video game soundtracks, and it rivals some of Zelda's best moments. This was from 1999, and the production quality sounds better than pretty much all Zelda games before Skyward Sword.

Also, this track is just perfect:

Haha yeah it's hard but it's so fun that you can play it for hours and not care. I never beat the second level, never even came close

I had one from my older brother, too. My mom never wanted to buy batteries so I could play it.

I agree that Sonic Adventure has one of the best game soundtracks. I never played but I've heard a lot on the internet.

I forgot about Spinball. That one actually was hard.

I totally loved whichever one when I was little, but when I couldn't clear a stage it got me pretty peeved of.

Speaking of which, isn't he making some kind of appearance on that one upcoming movie Wreck-It Raplh? Should be interesting.

Sonic sucked for a LOOOOONG time now. It only just started to get decent again. That being said, I played the shit out of 1, 2, and Spinball on my Genesis as a child. Dat Casino Night Zone theme.

Also, two cousins did a Let's Play series of the twenty years of Sonic games, culminating with Sonic Generations. I think they're pretty funny so here's a link to the playlist .

On a technical level, Sega got pretty sloppy with these games. Adventure 2, Heroes, and Unleashed all had some irritating visual glitches. It's a wonder Dreamcast couldn't save the company as a console maker. I had two Dreamcast's and both had shitty lasers that caused a screen skipping effect

Sonic was probably the first game I really got into. I played NES when I was very, VERY young but I never understood what was happening.

My grandpa used to have a Sega Genesis with Sonic 1, and it was like my favorite game ever. Then when he moved he got Sonic CD for his computer for me.. it was all over. I was sucked in. The music was A+ (yes, I mean the USA soundtrack), the graphics were beautiful, the time-travel mechanic was cool and added an extra layer of depth, the game was challenging but very beatable, and it just felt great to play. Still my favorite Sonic game.

I took a big break from Sonic, but my friends starting getting Gamecubes and as a result SA2:B. Once again, addicted. Played it to DEATH. I went back as a result and started playing the old ones over again, and I loved them.

I'm not so much into Sonic anymore, but I did enjoy Generations a lot and I still fire up SA2:B every now and then. It's unfortunate he had such a shitty streak of games, but it looks like the future of Sonic is getting brighter.

How has no one mentioned the chao yet? The chao system in SA2 was both time consuming and creative. I spent countless hours raising those little blue bastards into badass karate masters/adorable racing champions.

Yup, the infamous barrel room. So many kids got trapped there, including myself (I got out by pure luck once or twice). There's a spinning barrel that you stand on and you need to try to push it down under a ledge so you can jump down and continue.

So your first instinct is to jump on it and keep trying to hit it at the right point. Yeah, it can be done, but it's retardedly hard to do it that way. I felt really stupid when I found this out, but you're just supposed to alternate up and down on the control panel and it moves the barrel. God dammit Sega, that was the most confusing thing ever. It's not like up and down do much in the game before that moment, why would they help me now?

Edit: This.

It's been a while, but I had at least one or two Chaos Chao (immortal, highest evolution possible) with maxed out stats and ranks. I put a shitload of time into that. Honestly, I might've given Shadow the Hedgehog a pass had it retained the Chao Garden. Actually, I've still got the data. It's just been a while since I've played SA2:B or SADX.

Like, I knew intellectually that it was nothing more than a glorified Tamagotchi. But it was so damnably entertaining that I didn't care.
