Can you play, let's say, the minor pentatonic shape #1 anywhere on the fretboard?

I know that this shouldn't be so confusing but if I'm soloing in the key of A can I use that shape starting on the A of the 6th string?

Yep, but depending on where you play it it will be in different keys. For example, if you played...

-----------------------7-10-
------------------7-10------
--------------7-9-----------
----------7-9---------------
------7-9-------------------
-7-10-----------------------

it would be B minor pentatonic. This goes for other shapes/scales too, you just need to know which note is the "root".

I can't imagine anything worse than shagging to Mark Knopfler.

Maybe shagging Mark Knopfler, but that's about it.

Thanks, man. I thought so but wanted some confirmation.

The scale is a collection of notes. Try to think of it as that instead of a "shape".

for the penatonic scale, you can play those 5 notes anywhere they appear on the fretboard.

learning the notes on the fretboard is pretty important to really get started

learn the notes, learn the sounds. people who just play shapes don't really get anywhere. people who play by notes, play by sounds, and use the shapes to guide them are the ones who experience real results. you dig?

Great advice. TS could really benefit from your experience. How did you do it?

It's the same as all other harmony. Surround yourself with skulls and candles if it helps.
