Can you make question a bit clearer?
Are you asking the difference between a mid boost pedal and a pre-amp pedal or the difference between a mid boost button on an amp or the pre-amp gain knob on an amp?
If your on about pedals name the genre, your current gear, budget and any other information you can give. The more you tell the guys the more they can help

What exactly are you trying to understand? I suggest you google it and read up, there's tons of information on mid boost circuts out there. Basically, the EC one is an Active circut that uses one of your guitar's tone knobs as an adjustable mid boost control. It does what the name suggests, boosts the levels of your guitars mid range frequencies. I found that it resulted in a much thicker/beefier tone on the EC strat I played.
