While the Dracula character of the books was not a someone to be envied, he set the stage for today’s more complicated portrayal of vampires. While Dracula was eternally tormented, for the vampires of Anne Rice in the 1970s, vampirism was more of a state of being than a curse. For more modern vampires, such as the ones portrayed in Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, getting bitten is basically just a gateway to cool superpowers.
