A London, Ontario man - who was thought to be in an uncommunicative state for years - has been able to tell scientists he's not in any pain.
Scott Routley was asked questions as researchers examined his brain activity through an fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) machine.
During the scan, researchers say Routley was able to communicate with them through the power of thought.
"Scott has been able to show he has a conscious, thinking mind," said Professor Adrian Owen who led the team at the Brain and Mind Institute, at the University of Western.
"We have scanned him several times and his pattern of brain activity shows he is clearly choosing to answer our questions. We believe he knows who and where he is."

Somewhat unclear on the details but basically as the first article states:

Patients are asked to imagine playing tennis or walking around their house. The idea is to produce unique patterns of activity in different parts of the brain.
Through the fMRI scanner, researchers can ask yes or no questions. One type of brain activity is taken as a "yes" and the other as a "no".

What does the pit think of this? My first thought is this brings up the opportunity to ask the patient is they want to be kept alive. Of course that would be a huge moral dilemma, but if these people are conscious as the research suggest, being kept alive seems even worse then first conceived.

Indeed, direct communication via reading someone's mind dates back to the Prothean Empire.

then..... why is it presented as brand new? just because it's the first clinically relevant answer they've gotten?

It's so old and popular (at least I thought) that it was completely butchered on House MD.

I'm not actually sure. Probably, yeah. Seeing as though it only mentions the patient answering biographical questions in the earlier article. It's interesting stuff either way, although it adds a lot of complications about turning life support off now if they can communicate.

Well its happening right here in the city so that's why its big shit right now.

Also, two years isn't 'fairly old' lol, in the article you posted he said had been working on it for three years, and he will likely continue to for the remainder of his career. There is usually a wait before studies are reported on until data can be confirmed as conclusive. There is probably more much going on with this study that we won't hear about for a long time

I think it was on one of the later episodes.

It's funny that they have a team of IRL doctors who fact check the episodes and still they screwed up so immensely.

Also, two years isn't 'fairly old' lol,

I learned, briefly, about it in Psychology 101, which was about 3 year ago. My prof was explaining the fMRI and he mentioned this, almost in passing, as if it was no big deal. I don't know how long people have been doing this, but it's at least 3 years old, which is quite old in biological sciences.
