News to me...

The Trans-Asian Railway Network Agreement is an agreement signed on 10 November 2006, by seventeen Asian nations as part of a United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) effort to build a transcontinental railway network between Europe and Pacific ports in China. The plan has sometimes been called the "Iron Silk Road" in reference to the historical Silk Road trade routes. UNESCAP's Transport & Tourism Division began work on the initiative in 1992 when it launched the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development project.

The agreement formally came into force on 11 June 2009.

Participating countries:

Armenia
Azerbaijan
Cambodia
India
Indonesia
Iran
Kazakhstan
Laos
Mongolia
Nepal
Pakistan
People's Republic of China
South Korea
Russia
Sri Lanka
Tajikistan
Thailand
Turkey
Uzbekistan
Vietnam

Successes so far include:

- A train ferry across Lake Van, allowing rail services between Turkey and Iran

- link from China to Kazakhstan

- link from Iran to Central Asia (Trans-Caspian railway plus branch).

- Bosphorus tunnel connecting European Turkey and Asian Turkey is under construction. The projected opening date (as of early 2012) is June 2015.

- Iran-Pakistan: In August 2009 a goods train carrying containers traveled from Islamabad, Pakistan to Istanbul, Turkey; by April 2011, trains were running regularly.

I have never once heard this mentioned in the news. Seems significant though.

Also, did you know that Iran is the world's leading exporter of pistachios?

Anyway, what can you say about this?

Shit, railways are still a thing?

They can deliver about 100x if not mroe than what a semi-truck can

Just saying they can move LARGE amounts of product.

As a means of travel unless it's a short distance it seems sort of like a novelty.

I mean, I realize they're effective and all. Its just that, I was kinda under the impression that all the efficient/economical routes had been more or less built by like the mid-1900's.

Well this is just ignorant. I bet you're going to deny Obamacare being the main catalyst behind world peace

Slick. Can't believe it's taken me six years to hear about this.

I also can't believe we don't have something like it in the States up and running...

Rails aren't just for cargo, folks. High-speed rail should be connecting nearby cities already. You want us to fly for less than an hour? **** you. Give me a train ride.
