I really don't have any effect pedals or any doo-dads so to speak and wanted to treat myself to some for xmas this year.

Any suggestions on what types of things or effect pedals I should pick up? Best value for buck?

What do you like?

Maybe get a multifx to get your head around what effects you like and dont.

Have you got a max budget?

Some things to look at;

Phaser- Subdecay Baby Quasar, MXR Phase 90.
Flanger - Boss HF2, EHX Electric Mistress.
Harmony - Boss PS6, Eventide Pitchfactor.
Wah - get a stock GCB95 and have it or mod it yourself.
Chorus - Boss CE2.

I use these:
-Flanger
-Octaver
-Delay
-Chorus
-Wah

But it really depends on what you're trying to do. I think the most common fx are delay and wah.

If you really don't use fx for jamming/practice/gigs but want some to screw around with, a multifx is the way to go. Otherwise, you should get a Pog. I tried a Pog for the first time today and got along quite well with it, I want one so you might too.

quite a few can be found here including the high end. they have clips/videos for most of them. they can get pricey, but depending what you want you may want to throw out a few hundred.

Among other things, the wah pedal lets you play porno music, so there's that.

What kind of music are you into?

I'd say get a wah, but not one of the new Crybaby pedals.
I own 4 different wah pedals and it's easily my least favorite.
If you're going to go that route, I'd definitely recommend a Vox over the Crybaby.

1. Buy a cheap used multieffect pedal (cheap Zoom or Digitech would be good, even a behringer FX600 would do the job)
2. Try all the effects, mess with the parameters, decide which effects you like and which ones you don't.
3. Sell the multi for the same price you paid for it
4. Go buy decent ones of the effects you liked (or a good multi if you like multieffects)

I have more fun with my Wah pedal than anything else. I wish more (affordable) effects pedals existed.

wah
drive
tuner
delay
I'd take a flanger over phaser/chorus cuz with experience you can sorta make it sound like all three
and of course a reverb

Wah pedals are really fun
Whammy and Talkboxes are really cool to play around with, and you can get some really crazy sounds with modulation effects:
eg. With a phaser you can get some cool underwater type sounds and space- type sounds
Chorus pedals are cool because you can get some out of tune sounds with them, which can be really good for some metal solos
Tremolo pedals are also fun
Flangers can make cool space sounds and jet engine noises
Octavers can make some weird sounds too
And finally delay, if you set delay on long feedback then play something then immediately turn the knob backwards so the delay is back to zero, it sounds really cool

All of these "buy a multi-fx to see which effects you like" posts can easily be replaced with watching a bunch of pedal demos on YouTube, especially Johnny DeMarco's stuff because he's hilarious, informative, and can shred. OP, what's your budget? If you're rich, then I actually do recommend a multi-fx. An AxeFX. Then give it to me.

My favorite toys under $200 (reasonable enough, I think) are my Earthquaker Devices Hoof and BOSS Harmonist. Though I recommend doing what I plan on doing, which is buying a cheap, decent bass because bass is awesome.
R.I.P. Ronnie James Dio. Supplied amazing music to both me and my mother.

He will be missed.

^this. what kind of music do you play? someone who plays rock music would most likely look into delay, wah, etc where as someone who plays pop music may be more inclined to by a chorus or flanger. I've found MANY uses for my whammy pedal thats for sure. I also second the POG comment up there.

Overall my personal list would be delay, whammy, wah, chorus, and some sort of ring modulator just to make some crazy noises haha

The more I think about it the more the answer has gotta be Wah. I think they are the easiest to use right out of the box, mine required very little tweaking, one of the most useable pedals, and one of the funnest to play. Phaser, tremolo, flanger are fun for a bit but get old fast (to me anyways) but I always like ripping a good Wah solo or two.

That's like saying sex can be replaced by watching porn, it's just not the same as doing it yourself.

And the Behringer FX-600 goes for like $20 - $30 average on eBay, you'll easily get your money back on one.

If you don't know what effects you want, then a multifx unit is definitely the best place to start. You'll be able to play around with all the different effects & decide which you like, which you don't, which you need for different songs etc. They'll also often have some extra special effects that don't really fit into any specific category.

After you've been playing with it for a while, you'll start to realise which effects you're using & when you're using them, then you can start thinking about getting specific pedals to really hit the sound you're looking for.

Well I see your amp already has reverb so I'd suggest a multi FX unit of some sort that has at least one expression pedal like something from Line 6, Digitech or the like.

That should get you some of almost everything to at least try Phaser, Flanger, Wah, Fuzz, Leslie, Chorus, Delay etc. and typically more that one flavor of each. There should be something in there that you'll like.

That way you can have a lot of different FX to play with while that route also tends to make it a little tidier to deal with underfoot and without having all those extra cables and interconnects that can go bad that you get from hooking up a blazillion little separate boxes. In the long haul, it's also cheaper than all those individual boxes.

Why settle for just the salad or potatoes when you can have the whole dinner?

Maybe look for a used multi FX. You should be able to find something in that price range out there. I think I've seen them at my local GC priced like that.

There is tons of stuff out there that starving musicians have had to sell in order to eat.

Don't forget Boss and Roland, I'm sure there are others in addtion to Line6 and Digitech.

With all that stuff out there you should find something.

If you find something that looks interesting ask back here for folks who've had one.
