I really haven't listened to anything new this year. Evoken's new album was pretty cool and Ahab's wasn't bad. The new Drudkh was decent as well. There are still a ton I need to get to though. And for non-metal stuff, I liked new Dead Can Dance, Shawn Lee, and Trampled by Turtles.

I didn't finish my EP though, which is kind of disappointing. I did decide to release the two tracks I have recorded as a split, but they sound pretty mediocre.

Please. You don't even know me. You don't have to be KVLT 100% of the time. I bet you have Bieber or some guilty pleasure on your iTunes.

I still buy all my CDs.

The last few I picked up were:
Converge
Acacia Strain
Deftones
Machine Head (new live CD)
Parkway Drive
Sylosis

...and theres probably more Im forgetting off the top of my head

Yup, false confirmed.
There's no such thing; there never was. Where I am going you cannot follow me now.

Best of 2012? For me, The whole "This is the Six" album by Sheffield band While She Sleeps. They're relative newcomers - check them out if you haven't heard em.
#46
I actually haven't heard much metal this year aside from NeO and In Mourning.

NeO was good, but In Mourning was unmemorable.

And then there's the whole Alcest/Les Discrets thing but I thought both of their releases were weaker than their previous ones.

But looking through everyone's lists I see some things that I should probably check out, like the new Katatonia, Anathema, etc.
#47
There's too much great releases that I'vent had time fully to listen so far of year 2012, but new Canadian band Striker's album was particularly quite good, and Angel Witch's "As Above, So Below" wasn't let-down either.

Asphyx - Deathhammer is the only one I can really think of

New Ihsahn was a bit forgettable and new Devin Townsend was disappointing

EDIT: After a little thought, new Cryptopsy, Gojira, Anaal Nathrakh, Napalm Death, Pseudogod, Horrendous and Witchsorrow were decent

lol i was about to post my aoty list then i realized this was in metal. that would have been awkward. :p
#51
Fvck, of course! Chthe'ilist - Amechth'ntaas'm'rriachth was definitely the metal highlight for me. I don't know how it slipped my mind. Cause of the abstract name, perhaps?
#52
wrathrpayer - sun of moloch
Anhedonest - netherworlds
Pallbearer - sorrow and extinction

I'll put Dodsengel's Imperator on here even though I never gave it a full listen. And I found the new Dragged into Sunlight to be disappointing, but I should give it another listen.

Doesn't seemed like I listened to much stuff that came out this year, nothing really caught my attention.

edit: oh Timeghoul counts? Them too then.

Gotta be careful what you hear". I've rubbed shoulders enough with bands that have good reps and bad reps and its funny how they turn out.

They flat out robbed the promoter, expecting a fee that they never asked for prior to playing the show and threatened to beat him up if they didn't get paid.

That sounds backwards (promoters normally rob the bands). If thats true thats pretty shitty but if you weren't there you never know if its true.

I've threatened a promoter/club owner in texas. Told him we were gonna beat the **** outta him for not paying us. We played, didn't get payed our garuntee. The worst part was we were in the bar all day drinking/eating and easily spent our garauntee there so its not like they didn't have the money. Plus there was a good crowd. Scumbag.

I bet he told his friends the same story as the Sylosis one. Too bad we had contracts to prove otherwise.
#55
A friend of mine was at the show play drums for a supporting band, of which the promoter was also a member. And that's the point, if they had already agreed on a fee I'd understand, but from all reports they hadn't mentioned a thing. It was like £500 they wanted.

Non-metal

Most of the other good stuff has been mentioned already.

The fact that you have these on your list impresses me. A lot. All of them are also on my end of year list as well.

This is my list of stuff I've kept track of and very much enjoyed, pared down a bit so it's not ridiculous. There's some non-metal stuff too. No particular order (too early for that), although the ones I've enjoyed most tend more toward the top of the list.

If These Trees Could Talk – Red Forest
Wolfhetan – Was der Tag nicht ahnt
Dødsengel – Imperator
Enthral – Obtenebrate
Der Weg Einer Freiheit – Unstille
Darkenhold – Echoes from the Stone Keeper
Ne Obliviscaris – Portal of I
Spectral Lore – Sentinel
Mono – For My Parents
Mare Cognitum – An Extraconscious Lucidity
Khors – Wisdom of Centuries
Weird Fate – The Collapse of All that has Been
Skogen – Eld
Velnias – RuneEater
Essenz – Mundus Numen
Wodensthrone – Curse
Liam – MMXI
Hooded Menace – Effigies of Evil
Ahab – The Giant
Anhedonist – Netherwards
Rome – Hell Money
Be’lakor – Of Breath and Bone
Raventale – Transcendence
Threshold – March of Progress
Enslaved – Riitiir
Valborg – Nekrodepression
Elysian Blaze – Blood Geometry
Fortid – Pagan Prophecies
Dråpsnatt – Skelepht
Deathspell Omega – Drought
Angantyr – Forvist
Temple – On the Steps of the Temple
Galneryus – Angel of Salvation
Stoic Dissention - Relinquished
Schattenbrandung – I – Apophaenie
Sigh – In Somniphobia
Oak Pantheon – From a Whisper
Ethernal – Arkioas
Ulvegr – Арктогея
Goodbye Titan – Real Life Awaits Us

I've also yet to get to Vinterforest, Finsterforst, or Heimdalls Wacht. All of which could easily make a claim to the list somewhere.

Der Weg einer Freiheit - Unstille
Chthe'ilist - release
Absvrdist - Illusory
Malignancy - Eugenics

Those are the only releases of this year out of the admittedly paltry amount that I've kept up with that I'm still down with. It's odd how ones tastes can change so fast over a few months.

Of particular note due to its hypey-ness is that I was impressed by new Cattle Decap but then I realized it's essentially BTBAM reset into "grindcore" circumstance, blergh.

Kulturkampf - March Through Eternity

hahah glad you enjoyed it that much

haven't listened to much stuff from this year yet, so just off the top of my head - the albums that did make it onto the playlist:

Ignivomous - Contragenesis
Witchrist - The Grand Tormentor
Raven Dark - Гневом Раскрытия Вечности
Pseudogod - Deathwomb Catechesis
Nebelwerfer - The Aeon of Filth
Mgla - With Hearts Towards None
Navjarmaahr - Клыки Сиянья Ночи (don't know if it's anyone elses cup of tea here, but I enjoyed it a lot, despite not expecting much)
Dordeduh - Dar De Duh (took a few listens to fully grow on me, still a bit fragmented and wandering , but undeniably a monolithe effort)
Burzum - Umskiptar (I'm sure plenty will disagree, yet I feel that Varg is one of the few people that remained true to his music-making principles, and despite its shortcomings it managed to hold my attention throughout)

I've basically heard no new metal this year. However, I will nominate Ales Stenar for being tangentially related. Ironically, my only nomination is something that I might have heard when it leaked back in 2011.

This is basically the only material I distinctly remember from recent.

There are some good ones on the near horizon though. We'll see how many make it out before year's end.

God damn, I just listened to this and I think I'm in love.

Anhedonist - Netherwards
JK Flesh - Posthuman (maybe not technically metal, but its Justin Broadrick so I don't give a fuck, about time dubstep meets metal was done right)
Neurosis - Honor Found In Decay
Angel Witch - As Above So Below

Not really listened to much metal this year, most of the albums I have were pretty uninspiring. From the looks of this thread there's a lot I've missed.

Not too shabby man, taking a year out to focus on music which has been going well. Studying at the premier studio in Scotland where Calvin Harris and shit record, started up a wee label and I might be having my first gig of the new material I'm working on being in support of Alt-J who just won the Mercury Prize (even though they're shite) in a 1000-cap venue, which is mental.

How's yerself?

Angel Witch - As Above So Below

Really? I think the kindest thing I could say about it would be that it has it's moments. But for the most part I just found it a bit lacklustre, the energy didn't seem there, it just felt too clinical and the songs didn't seem good enough to overlook the above.

Are you familiar with Necro Deathmort? I don't know bugger all about dubstep or what stylistic features it has (other than wobs ), but I've heard people suggest that this is essentially dubstep and doom.

I can't understand for the life of me why BTBAM has so many damn fans while sounding fairly dreadful most of the time. They're like the metal(?) version of Muse.

On the condition that you're not talking about the 2nd law, that's an extremely good thing.

And they have so many fans because they continue to push the boundaries of the metal genre, and their diversity also helps them appeal to some of the more occasional metal-listeners...
