I still believe that Slash is a kick ass guitarist, especially recently, his playing (at least live) has been phenomenal, a lot more technical and less sloppy than I remember it.

I prefer the second 2 of the Slipknot albums (Vol.3 and AHIG) as opposed to the apparently godlike first 2 (self-titled and Iowa)

A good riff or a groove triumphs over technicality and wankery any day but the fusion of both can be really awesome.

Shredding is not soulless and emotionless because it fulfils an emotion/emotions for the player, i'm sure Steve Vai, Yngwie, Buckethead, Michael Angelo, all those kinds of instrumental virtuoso players genuinely love what they're doing.

Djent IS a genre of music whether you like it or not (it's also a playing style, a style of guitar tone and onomatopoeia)

Chopin is a piece of shit (but you guys already knew that lolz). In fact I can't think of a single Polish tonal composer who didn't have horrendous taste.

Absolute music (music emphasizing form and logical development) >>>>>>>>>>>>>> programmatic music (music used to tell a specific story or imagery), which is mostly insincere crap by people who fail to realize that music at its best expresses the abstract.

...modes and scales are still useless.

This too, actually.

People have a bash at slipknot or deathcore for playing 1's and 0's on the fretboard...

..they aint got shit on old school death metal. You're lucky to hear a solo that's a coherent sequence of notes as well, as most of it is chromatic shred + wah and whammy bars.

I'll agree with the middle two, first one.. bit unfair, he was a great vocalist, just didn't have any good songs.

Last one, I dont like Dream Theater, but not for those reasons. I dont like them because it takes forever for their songs to sound good. Everything else is 70's bluesy-prog rock riffs up until the bridge, where they just pile on everything in one go.

I think he has a bunch of good songs e.g. heaven and hell for example is a a masterpiece imo and his vocals are perfect for it. that said though, alot of his songs sound the same and his lyrics can be really cheesy sometimes. He was a good vocalist though no doubt that and he inspired a loads of other vocalists too I just don't see how he can be considered THE best.
true, I hate how when Petrucci plays a cool riff he forgets about it and plays something else instead of developing the riff and repeating it, and the tendency of being complex just for the sake of being complex the band has

I don't like Periphery, or I guess more specifically - I can't stand Misha Mansoor. The band's music dosen't really do a a whole lot to excite me, but there's just something about Misha specifically that I dislike more than the band as a whole.

I have no idea why, but mentioning that seems to upset people more than it really should.

I hate Schubert. Schubert is untouchable in the circles of Classical music. You can dislike virtually any composer you want, but Schubert is an absolute no-go for whatever reason.

His lyricism is admirable, but I think most academics just jizz over the fact that he makes sudden remote modulations. They should be jizzing over Brahms who did that with way more style and class.

...modes and scales are still useless.

Didn't we make this thread before and it just turned into a flamefest?

I like Ke$ha, her music is catchy and fun to listen to.

Progressive/Technical metal bands are really boring.

Limp Bizkit is fun to listen to and Wes Borland is a great guitarist.

I like a lot of pop music, including the likes of Nickleback, Coldplay and U2 that a lot of people are probably sick of while waiting for the latest hip hop song on the radio. I will listen to a lot of stuff. If I didn't like it at first, I have to listen to it a few more times then it's buried in my head and then I'm "ok with it". Currently addicted to K-Pop, not only for the music reasons.

One of the guys I used to hang out with listened to Dream theater and it was the vocals that annoyed me more than anything else. He played me some stuff from their side project (it's instrumental stuff, but I can't recall the name) and it wasn't bad.

True, unlike the majority of their fans I'm not a drooling retard, I know they're far from the best band in the world. I still feel ashamed about my join date. :P

Either way that's what encouraged me to buy my first guitar, since then I've started liking a lot more genres and being generally more open to new music. xD

yeah the vocals are pretty shite too, weak and nasally. I think as individual musicians they are brilliant (minus labrie) but together not so much but I dunno alot of people seem to love them so it's down to personal preference I guess

I agree with this. Labrie has his moments of total greatness, but his voice can't pull off heavier music and he is often off-key live from the videos I've seen.

I still love Coheed & Cambria's first three albums, they were very important to me in high school. I've since distanced myself from the band though, primarily because a lot of their fans are totally bonkers. Everyone seems to either worship them or despise them, so being in the middle is tricky because of the stigma attached to them.

Not to mention that their last few albums have been varying degrees of bad. Or maybe I've just outgrown that style. Probably both.
