I'm not sure what you mean by weird scratchy metallic sound, but to me it sounds like:
Strings (some sul pont maybe?)
Harp and/or inside of the piano

EDIT: On second listening I really think it's playing inside the piano. Like sweeping the strings.

That's definitely a sweep across the strings inside the piano. Pretty common sound actually.

If you're talking about the high sounds, that's harder to pinpoint. Flutes, Picc, and maybe the higher strings of the piano, along with high percussion.

...modes and scales are still useless.

its a combination of a big bass drum and the sweeping of the strings inside a piano. Trust me
