I believe this is my biggest NGD ever. Scored an incredible deal on this, $1900 without a scratch on it. This is the elusive Musicman John Petrucci Koa BFR. Ever since I saw one at Guitar Center I promised myself I'd grab one if I found a great deal. More pictures coming soon, but for now just a taste. Full review and good pics tonight.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

Quote by dspellman
The guy wears a KFC Bucket and a white mask during performances, and you're interested in the color of his pickup covers?

Dear GOD. That is gorgeous!

Nah, I prefer to tune lower. My tunings usually go into weird Hebrew symbols.

Quite pretty. I like the looks of the Koa, whether it's on an acoustic or electric. I know how Koa effects the tone of an acoustic, but how does it sound on an electric?
#7
Can't recall ever hearing a Koa electric. Record some clean tones for us!

Impressive. HNGD!

Now, you do realize that if you use strings other than EBs on this, the strings will melt...right?

How do you like the piezo pups?

I hate people who own JP's so much.

Thanks guys. I do in fact use slinky strings. The piezo is amazing, and the whole guitar just sounds alive in a way I've rarely heard.

Wow. That is one beautiful guitar. Where is the scratch?

Ive said it before, and Ill say it again. The longer I am on UG the more I fall in love with JPs and MusicMan guitars in general.

Beautiful Guitar. I have the hots for Koa
#18
I've had the hots for it since it was released but I wasn't about to pay Guitar Center $3500...I was waiting for an opportunity to hop on a deal and luckily it happened. Love this guitar. Need to crank it and it's too late, so that'll be tomorrow

Love it. Haven't seen a koa JP with chrome hardware before. Looks amazing.

Thanks griffin. It's a Guitar Center special run from what I understand. I greatly prefer it to the gold hardware. I finished doing a setup on it and it plays great. The neck was actually a little TOO straight when I got it, but now it's all great. Now I can set off learning all of Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory

Thanks! I love the finish, especially on the neck. I've never seen a neck with blackburst edges. I'm really digging it, and the bridge pickup sounds great coil tapped.

What you're going to need is a new amp.

Report after playing my first studio session with the BFR: fantastic. Didn't have to tune once in 2 hours of playing. EBMM makes some funky designs but they sure can build a guit fiddle.

Is that a Koa top on a Mahogany back?

It's one of, if not THE best looking Music Man I've ever seen.

Exactly right, mahogany body with
a koa top. Thanks!

Adam, going to try this weekend. Haven't gotten a chance yet.

I was looking at some figured KOA yesterday at the hardwood store, and it's like $60 a board foot. Definitely one of the most expensive wood they sell, and it's gorgeous. I might snag some if I see a piece big enough for a top(I work there, so I get wood for a little over half price, yay!).

Here's a few more photos while I've got the camera out.

Hopefully some audio coming tomorrow.

Yep, they're stainless. I think all BFRs have SS frets.
