I recently purchased a Marshall 1960a lead loaded with two V30s and two G12T-100s and now i need a head. I currently have no budget, but if i could keep it under $1000, that'd be awesome. I play mostly hardcore/powerviolence, so i need something with bite/low end to it. I'm very new to this stuff, so bare with me. I've considered an Orange Jim Root Dark Terror, but i'm wondering if there are better or cheaper options.

Willing to go used?

IMO the Jim Root is just a Dark Terror with a 3 band EQ. No where near worth the jump up in price. Nothing wrong a good ol' 6505+ or a 5150 for hardcore stuff. They can had pretty cheap used, depending on where you are.

That's the advantage of being such a distance from Yianni. I can continue to live my life without fear of stumbling upon his dark terror.

6505+ heads are worth around $600-$700 used
5150 iii mini heads I've seen go for about the same, sometimes more because there's such a high demand
5150 ii Peavey heads are quite cheap and are the same amp as the 6505, they go for $600 all day long.

the combos are an entirely different story and since you've got a really sexy nice cab then I'm not gonna go into that.

just get yourself a TS-9 to tighten the low end on whatever you get.

The TS-9 is the Ibanez Tubescreamer, a very common, solid and good overdrive.
When you use it as a boost (level on 10, gain on 0, tone to taste) then it basically makes your guitar tone's low end tighter for chuggah chuggah or fast rhythms.

Ok, sweet.
I'm thinking about going with a JCM 900 50-100 watt, depending on what i can get used after doing some reading. Will a good tubescreamer still get me where i want to go?

You can get a used VHT Deliverance 120 for a $1000 easy if you're okay with a single channel amp. The 60 watt version is a little less. Somehow I don't think there are lots of clean interludes in powerviolence but what do I know..

you might get awa with a JCM900 SL-X or Mk III but the dual reverb is a bad amp unless you mod it.

I'd go 5150 for that, or JCM800 which would be over budget.

You can try and snag a (used) Marshall Vintage Modern head for under a grand. I got mine for $950 and the previous owner used it for like 2 hours and kept really good care of it, so it was a great deal imo. It definitely has bite and good low ends (of course, depending on ow you eq it).

Also, you should check out a Mesa Dual Rectifier and a Peavey 6560. I hear they're pretty nice amps.

splawn would be a solid option. i have a nitro and a promod great build quality, hand made in the US by a small crew of guys. they are very helpful and i have spoken to Scott with a question over the phone. so thats kind of nice. he is a good guy.

i paid $1050 for a mint SIG:X shipped. i love that amp. three good channels. i love the cleans and how felixible the second channel is, it can be clean or high gain (i use it for more of a djent) and the third channel is nice for a heavy tone. it loves K85's/K100's.

Good luck with the tweaking... the Sig X has so many switches and knobs that even i feel a little confused (an I use a MkV).

That said... the Sig X is one of the very few amps I've evern tried that covers the clean and high gain sounds very well.

the tweaking isn't as bad with the SIG:X as my MKIVI is.

IMHO the SIG:X it is a better than my MKIV overall in terms of the whole package, but i can't get past my tone on the second channel of my MKIV boosted with my timmy. it is literally godly. and i still have a nice LOG tone for the third channel.

but the SIG:X will do a lot more.with the bloom setting on the cleans they are pure sex. channel three is killer, channel two is perfect for more of a djent type of tone.

Sounds like you need something really gainy and nasty... I'd take a look at a Peavey 5150 or a Marshall JCM900 SL-X.

On the JCM900, stay away from the Dual Reverb. The Mk.III is better, but not as good as the SL-X for over the top gain.

6505+ kicks the shit out of the JCM 900. Put an OD over it for the feedback inbetween notes in powerviolence. If you crank the post and knock down the pre a little it'll get a more vintage, gritty sound.
MIG 50s in my opinion lack the balls for powerviolence and hardcore. If you're set on the JCM and that, for sure go with the JCM.

Definitely check out the Boss SD-1. Super cheap, and it's much more dirty than a typical tubescreamer - that's why I like mine. It's much more gritty and apparent, not smooth and transparent-ish like Tubescreamers are.

I had a TS7 and it was somewhat useable as well. But might as well just get the Joyo TS clone like Dave Mc said, those things are actually fairly decent.

I saw Iron Lung last week and the guitarist was using some Marshall rack thing, looks like the 9004 since it was quite shallow.
