I have one about 20 minutes from here (I live in Pennsylvania for anyone unaware).

I don't go there often. My mom does occasionally. I don't see any problems with it.
#43
I used to go to one when I lived elsewhere. It's a discount supermarket that doesn't sell name brands.

There are two or three within maybe twenty minutes from my house.

I tried to get a job there once because they apparently pay crazy awesome money around here. Dunno if that's a regular thing.

Do they actually? I would buy so many shopping carts if I lived there.

You have to put 25 cents in the cart to detach it from the others so you can use it. You can only get your quarter back if you put your cart back where it belongs

When I looked on the wiki for Aldi, it said that Walmart tried to compete with it but failed because of the inferior products. So I guess it's like a step up from Walmart.

So if you walk off with it, it's just like walking off with a regular trolley where you don't pay?

Eh, Walmart typically sells "name brands" where Aldi does not, and Aldi sells it cheaper. In my experience Aldi products can be really good, or really bad, it just depends what you get.

And yes, I suppose so.

People who protest Aldi are just like people who protest Walmart, namely stupid. Oh, yeah...your terrible Ma & Pa Grocery Store (that should've gone out of business in the '50s) will probably suffer. But that's what happens when you don't get with the times.

Australian here, an we have quite a few aldis.
Not as popular as our 2 main supermarkets Coles and Woolies, they only sell mostly homebrand products and random peices of furniture. There shops are small as shit and the trollies you have to put a coin in to use them (WTF),
Like wut!
And the checkout chicks sit down on these massive ass office chairs?
Everyone else in the other shops dont get no seat!

Aldi is owned by the same people that own Trader Joe's. Its' a similar concept; lots of frozen foods, boxed stuff, pre-packaged things.

It's where all the Somalians in Minneapolis shop. It's like Little Mogadishu.

Where did you get that idea?
#64
Only poor people shop at the one near me, and they only stock knock-off brand stuff, and some name-brand soft drinks.

It's also dirty, they need a deposit for a cart, there's poor people everywhere, and the staff is miserable. There's a Harris Teeter within walking-distance from this place.... I go to Harris Teeter.

There's this store opening up in my hometown called "Aldi." Upon looking at Wikipedia, apparently they're based in Germany, and most of the locations are in Europe.

I really have never seen or heard of one until now. It looks like a grocery store which is fine and dandy. But what confused me was before the structure was built, and it was just an open field, some people in my town actually protested out there, holding up signs saying to "Stop Aldi" and has a web address to petition and shit to prevent it from being built there.

Anyways, since so many of you guys are from Europe, I figured I'd ask you guys if you know anything about the stores or if you've been to one. And if so, what's so special about them? Or what would cause people to protest them? I looked online and didn't really see anything "protestable."

Or maybe you're from the US and are around one of their US locations. I don't know how many are in the US, but I've never heard or seen one.

Protest Aldi, wtf.

Yeah, ok. So Aldi started in Germany a few decades ago and it is now the richest supermarket in Germany. In fact, the Aldi family is one of the richest in Germany, although nobody knows who they are.

Ever heard of Lidl? It is basically the same idea as Aldi, just a different brand and some slightly different products. Aldi actually comes from the wife of the guy who started Aldi. She started Lidl after they got divorced. Confused yet?

Anywho, the "trick" about Aldi (and Lidl, essentially), is that every week they have different things on offer. Maybe one week they have some furniture and exercise items, and the week after they'll have special pots and pans and laptops. Obviously, people will think "Damn, I better go to Aldi this week cuz they have cheap laptops for sale before they sell out cuz they won't last till next week" and voila! You have people buying groceries at Aldi.

Yes, the brands are cheaper than in other places, but not always, and the products they sell are usually just as good as anywhere else. I definitely recommend it.

Here in Scotland they have this huge brand called Tesco, which you could describe as the "Walmart of food" but I still go to Aldi or Lidl most times. They just sell better things.

At the beginning Aldi/Lidl were categorized as a "poor person's shop" in Germany as for many people over there on benefits it was the only place they could afford to shop, but quickly people realized how good the products were, so now all sorts of people from every class shop there.

I don't need and Aldi when I have Winco. Cheap ass food, and it's name brand. Of course, they have their brand too, and that's cheap as shit, but not all of their stuff is very good.
#73
All I will say is that on my most recent trip to an Aldi, I found that you can buy a badass premade (but uncooked) 16" pizza for like $6.

And well, that's just fine.
#74
It's like a supermarket which sells all random brands of food that you will never have heard of. Some of it is good, some of it is shit, and all of it is cheap. Like real ****in cheap. Here in Australia they have made it so lots of aussie brands get a foot in the door, just ones you would never have heard. That said, you can buy normal grog in the one hear, and normally save yourself about $4-5 on whatever it is. Good shit

I love Aldi!! I live right next to one and I do all my shopping there, some of the stuff they sell is actually really really good, as well as being super cheap. I can go in with 10 pounds and be sorted for the week.

Oh yea, and the checkout people are all on speed.

There's a lot of Aldi's where I live (about 15 minutes from the German border) and they're really popular for their low prices. They mostly sell a lot of cheap, generic stuff, which is great for buying in bulk. Overall quality is meh, but they have good wine, so I can't complain.

It's pretty good, I like how they don't pack your items into plastic bags. They just scan them through and slide them down the moving ramp and you have to pack them into your trolley or your own plastic bags yourself.

Thats every supermarket I've ever been to.

Aldi stores are the most disgusting ones I have ever been too. They are filled with cheap, terrible brands. The food there stinks (literally). They don't have any decoration. The people who work there are terrible, low productive etc.

All to make them the most cheapest store around. I don't eat anything that comes from there though. Don't trust their health inspection for shit, they probably cheapened on them too.
