SO, the story...

I've been looking for a new amp since the speakers blew on my marshall valvestate, originally I had my heart set on a peavey 6505 - but since i heard the clarity on the Blackstars, as well as the lower wattage, I was quickly drawn to it. After many fruitless nights of ebay searching, I finally found an HT 20 combo in the right price range, snatching it for a few quid shy of £310.

Anyway I got the amp on friday night - sat on the floor next to it playing until my family shut me up. First impression - Christ it's loud! I read that valve power is far louder than solid state, but I hadn't really thought it would be this loud! The clean channel is awesome, tone control goes all the way from a thick, clear, almost percussive sound to a more mellow, traditional clean. This is the first valve amp I've owned, so it was awesome for me to crank the volume and hear the breakup, also responds really well to the guitar volume control.

OD channel is brutal, I find the key is in the volume control, distortion sounds really thick, with a lot of room presence at higher volumes. The thing that amazed me was the clarity when playing chords at high gain, even with 5 and 6 string, full chords, notes all rang out, absolutely no mud. But it still sustains, which is something which I always considered as a trade off - high gain/clarity, have one or the other, not so with this.

I'm certainly still smitten with this so the review probably isn't that subjective to be frank... if I had some time over the weekend - I'll record some clips

I've always been a fan of these amps, although I think they're a bit too pricey for what they are, and of course there was that whole marketing thing from Blackstar...

Glad you like it, though! It's definitely a huge step up from the Valvestate!

Got the same amp last month for Christmas and am loving it as well. Voiced a tad darker than I'd like, which I'm hoping can be helped by swapping out the stock speaker...

As far as the Blackstar hate - - it sounds great to me! I knew what I was getting into when I picked the amp re: all tube vs. tube & some SS.. If you get it at the right price, it's a fantastic and versatile amp for bedroom, jamming, and smaller gigs and covers a range of styles. Hope you continue to enjoy yours!

Hey man! Just wondered if there was an Impedance selector on this? Cause if I get one I was wanting to stick an 8 ohm V30 in it, but wanted to know if it was possible. Cheers!

Yep, that would work fine. It has options for 1x16Ohm, 1x8Ohm, and 2x16Ohm.

Tone is in the fingers.

What you really need is a new amp.

I have been hearing about MG amps lately. I have heard good about them, but only a few times have they been talked about here.

HNAD. Cool amp.

I had one of those. I recently sold it to a 7 year old kid and his dad. I hope he's using it more then I did.
