the noise my amp (vht special 6 ultra combo) is to the point where you can hardly hear the guitar over it.

i have tried different cables, guitars, with/without pedals, and different inputs (clean, ultra inputs). there is a consistent amount of noise being made. it is a crackling/blowtorch kind of noise and i have no idea what is going on with it. i put new tubes in it about 6 or 7 months ago and i've been having this issue for about 4 or 5 months

Try one of your spare tubes in each position and see if one of your tubes is causing it. Tubes can be dodgey from the factory - it does happen.

Also, try twiddling the knobs and see what happens. It could be a dodgey pot.

Another possibility is a bad speaker connection. Check those too.

And a yet another possibility could be filth in the sockets. Try cleaning them all. By all I mean both phono and tube sockets.

If that fails you may be looking at a dry joint - try punching it.

Always keep at least 1 spare preamp, and a set of power tubes.

See, it's important that people clarify when they say "metal", because I pretty much always assume they are a Cannibal Corpse fanboi.
