Somebody should have told this dickhead "science teacher."

A casual teacher who wanted to demonstrate a scientific principle by inviting students to hold on to dry ice thought it would be a good learning experience, a NSW court has heard.

‘‘Some students obviously took the game too seriously and [held on] too long to the dry ice,’’ Damien Hilton wrote in an incident report after eight of the students suffered blisters and severe burns at Terrigal High School, in the NSW Hunter, last February.

Mr Hilton, 49, of Wyong, previously pleaded not guilty to 10 charges, including eight counts of assaulting a student occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was also charged with negligently inflicting grievous bodily harm and recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The evidence concluded at Toronto Local Court on Tuesday with a burns expert from Concord Repatriation Hospital telling the court contact with dry ice for at least one minute could cause scarring, while contact for more than two minutes could cause burns so severe that they could require surgery.

At least one of the students held the solid carbon dioxide for more than two minutes, the court previously heard.

In the incident report, which was filed after a number of students were taken to Gosford and Wyong hospitals, Mr Hilton wrote: ‘‘I thought it would be a good learning experience for the students to experience sublimation of dry ice.’’

Sublimation is the transition of a substance from a solid state to gas.

‘‘I had volunteers from the class come out and hold dry ice whilst another student timed them as a sort of game,’’ the report continued.

Photos tendered to the court showed a range of injuries from redness and swelling to large blisters and skin completely burnt from the students’ palms.

At the conclusion of yesterday’s evidence, defence barrister Stuart Bouveng said he would argue that the prosecution had not provided evidence that was capable of proving the assault charges.

Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson adjourned the case to April.

A teacher should know not to let stupid kids handle stuff that might be dangerous...

Dry Ice is, at its warmest, -78.5C. For "context" of how cold that is.

That might not actually burn you, since it isn't the kerosene liquid burning, its the vapors.

My science teacher thought it would be responsible to pass around a test tube of ethanol while writing shit on the board. He was surprised when it came back nearly empty. I don't know what happened to it, I assume nobody drank it there because there was no screaming/dying, but I imagine it went into someone's drink bottle for later.

We had some fun with liquid nitrogen in physics; dipping our fingers in it (only for a split second), soaking rubber balls in it and smashing them, and storing tons of balloons in one thermos full of the stuff, like a balloon clown car. That stuff's pretty standard from what I can tell, though. Wouldn't surprise me if half the Pit did it in high school too.

I don't know who's more of an imbecile. The teacher should have known that was going to happen when you hold onto something that cold. The fact that he made it a "game" multiplies the stupidity.

The kids are even more idiotic for holding onto it for that length of time through the pain.

I've worked with dry ice in a lab several times and accidentally got some on my hand for a second or two. Even that was unpleasant enough to get a gasp and a sharp retreat of my hand. How stupid can you get?!
I shall grant you three wishes.

None of which will work.

Does the above post enrage, offend or confuse you?

Well the Mythbusters put their hands in molten lead. Neither one hurts you if it's brief enough, and oddly enough it's for the same reason.

But even knowing that I'd probably never touch a liquid gas or metal.

Putting your finger in molten lead only works if your finger is wet, if it isn't you'll just lose a finger.

Liquid Nitrogen is safe to hold as long as you keep it moving, because it sublimates to nitrogen gas so quickly from your body heat that it rests on a layer of nitrogen gas. The cold bit never touches you.

Dry ice doesn't do this because it is pretty warm as far as cold things go.

I live right near there, I actually work at Toronto.
This kinda stuff doesn't surprise me at all, a lot of public schools around here are renowned for sketchy education.

My friend was taught that giraffes have such long necks because all the best leaves were high up on trees so they stretched their necks so they could eat the tasty leaves.
Some people like cupcakes exclusively, while myself, I say there is naught nor ought there be nothing so exalted on the face of God's grey Earth as that prince of foods:

Cause it was my son, to him 18 months to heal the skin and nerve damage will be life long issue. Was googling the topic today, was just double checking when the upcoming court date was and saw this thread. Just thought I'd pop in and give a bit more detail

Oh, people responded to that thing I posted a month and a half ago, before someone else bumped it a month and a half later. So while we're here: The prof actually did it first, and only for a split second (you know, like I said). Like someone else said, your body heat sublimates enough of it to create a layer of gas between you and the liquid nitrogen, but it doesn't last long. I think only one or two of us were brave enough to try it ourselves, but nobody lost any fingers or anything.
Science.
