i have recently realized that my playing on guitar is not up to par as of where i wish it were, i would really like to be able to be able to play some of mastodons music, or really just anything somewhat technical, i dont know what i should be doing differently to achieve this goal, my usual practice regiment is that i will practice scales for about 5-10 minutes then practice playing songs

It sounds like you just need to be smarter about how you practice. Practicing scales is a good thing, and practicing songs is a great thing, but they won't get you anywhere if you're half-assing it, playing the same material over and over, etc. You need to constantly be challenging yourself. Play your scales in different, unfamiliar patterns. Keep learning songs that are barely too hard for you. Start slow, work it out until it's perfect at that speed, then start to speed it up.
Only play what you hear. If you don’t hear anything, don’t play anything.
