I'd like to have a thread where people can post some do's and don'ts of being in a band.
I know there's a lot! So what can you think of.

One of mine is Don't wear your own merchandise.I knew these guys at my school that would always wear their own t-shirts and I thought it was very cheesy.

Idk I haven't ever been in a band. I'm not very good at writing music for other people. My music is really my own music.

But I agree, wearing your own band clothes is kinda lame. I'm talking to you Bret Michaels. Motley crue kicked your ass.

If you're a metal band dont say your song titles in a metal voice before every song. Nobody likes metal because its evil these days.

If you are touring with between the buried and me, be good. Sorry job for a cowboy and coheed but iv got my jazz ears on, your music is boring.

I don't see how you could be in a band without friends. My friends all formed a band without me in.high school. Sucked, but they wrote one EP and all quit.

i wish my friends and i could get around to recording. we have so many great ideas of ep/demo/whatever titles and we are always received really well live but sometimes i think we suck. you know when people compliment you it always seems like they're just sort of being patronizing?

And wouldn't you eventually become friends with your band members anyways?

All I know if they kinda got too cocky. a band with 5 best friends means you've got everyone you talk to saying your music is awesome. You think too highly of your abilities. Goes downhill from there. But when you go to record, don't get varied away, simplify everything. They added too mamy layers because they thought they could.

Huh. Never heard that before. Totally bogus.
The only band I've ever been in was with friends. Well, not that me and the drummer working with my guitar riffs while everyone else didn't really do anything or sometimes didn't even show up counts as a band anyways.

I was kind of nodding my head to your comment until you said Coheed wasn't good. I don't know if you were trying to be witty or what have you, but last time I checked it was BTBAM supporting Coheed, not the other way around.

Strange. Only time I've ever jammed was with friends and I really enjoyed it. Wish I could've done more but they didn't really seem too interested so I just make everything myself.
Also as someone mentioned the band members will kinda become your friends anyways.

I think maybe that's said because semi- to full-professional bands are under a lot of pressure, and that tension can cause friendships to break up. Much like how if you date someone whom you've been good friends with and then break up, your friendship will likely never be the same.

Then again, I've never been in a band. Assign to my opinion the proper amount of shits.

There's nothing wrong with being in a band with your friends, just so long as everyone in the band realises that as far as the band is concerned, you are 'business partners' first, 'creative partners' second and 'friends' last.

by jazz ears i mean tuning your ears to listen to everything individually. you cant listen to all musci like that, otherwise yourl shoot yourself out of boredom. btbam lets me listen to any one instrument and be satisfied. i rarely listen to the whole band at once. but when i listen to lets say rhcp i listen to the whole band, unless im hooked on frusciantes guitar. i cant listen to chad smiths drumming and nothing else, or anthony's vocals alone. but with jazz and good prog metal i can just listen to blake richardson drumming and nothing else all colors long and be satisfied. its not that the musicians are any better its the way its written. or maybe im weird. when i listen to jazz i separate all the instruments in my head. when i lsiten to pop or rock i combine them all. i would get bored listening to coheeds vocals or drumming or bass alone.

Have fun.
Sounds kinda gay, but being in a band which you aren't enjoying sucks the big ones. Even if you don't really like the music, if you're having a good time then it's all good.

Why? BTBAM suck dicks for free, and I'd rather have CC everyday than that boring pseudo prog modern metalcore garbage.

Write music not breakdowns. I mean if you want to throw a breakdown in there somewhere then fine but your music shouldn't be 100% breakdown. You gotta try a little harder than that.

Let me expand upon this
-One breakdown per hundred songs you write
-One
-1 ****ing breakdown in all of your songs
-that's it
-Breakdowns are annoying
-You know what? no breakdowns, for any song, for any band, ever
-No Breakdowns
-Ever
-That is all

That's funny how some cool metal bands actually had good breakdowns in their songs (I noticed them in Metallica, Nightwish songs), and they were not just lame open string w**king in Drop C as modern -core bands play.
