I have no degree in law or anything, so don't quote me on this, but I think it's possible to sue if they defame you and you are at a loss somehow.

Man up and just talk to them.

I don't think so.

Is there a law against nosey neighbours which spread lies and rumours?

Not sure about a law but anymore, some people sure are vengeful over words. Everytime I say I really like a job a lot, I end up getting laid of or fired for some bogus reason. Go figure. The last job I had I told the boss it was the best job I ever had. Guess what, I get laid off while others to this day continue to work.
The last three jobs have been like that. Weird isn't it.
My son and I are now official welfare recipients thanks to some civilian cowards political warfare games.
