Since getting my vypyr 30, i have been looking for a new guitar. Right now I'm playing on a squier strat, but i would like a better metal guitar for what i play. I play system of a down, iron maiden, metallica, megadeth and coheed and cambria. I am looking at the GRX20 because I am on a tight budget. I have seen many good reviews but i am wondering if people are saying that because it is a decent guitar for the price not that it is actually a decent guitar. Any advice?

2. Arpeggio Seriousness
3. Lock Horns
4. Take a big fresh breath of air
5. Go Surfin'
6. Get high on fire

I'm not a fan of the cheaper Ibanez guitars, the pickups tend to be pretty weak.

What is your budget? Are you willing to go used?

My budget is $250. I am realizing now that low-end ibanez aren't the greatest. I would be fine with going used. I want a schecter or explorer the most. I don't need a tremolo system.

I'm looking at the epiphone les paul special ii now. I really only need something with decent humbuckers that can play metal and cleans decently.

Stay away from Epiphone Les Paul Specials, and the II's.

Don't be afraid to look at lesser known brands as well. People buy them and sell them for an outrageously low price later because it isn't a hgue brand name
Main Rig:

Epiphone MKH Les Paul Custom 7 - Ronda
Ibanez RG8 "Scarlet" - AKA The Rambanez
Fender Strat "Danielle"/"Dani"
Line 6 POD HD Pro
Randall XL 4x12

Check out guitar centers used section. I got a '93 Aria Pro II MA-15 for 140 bucks shipped.

To give you an idea of the deal I got, the guitar has a sen body (Japanese ash. Tonal properties of alder but with more character) Maple neck, rosewood fretboard, HSS pick up configuration, 5 way selector and a coil split at the bridge. The guitar retailed for 400 bucks.

Some notable not very well known brands to look at used.

Kramer
Hamer
Aria/Aria Pro II
Washburn
Jay Turser
Alvarez
Agiles seem to be favored on this site as well

Also look at Godin. They have great bang-for-your-buck guitars

99% of Godins would be out of TS's price range.

Kick ass guitars though.

Not used though. At least in my area they go for dirt cheap because no one knows how great they are.

That's what I was referring to. I rarely see Godins go for around the 250 dollar mark, so most will be out of TS's price range.

Really?

I see them go for between 200-300 on the daily.

But, region does have an effect on that..

On GC website you can get a used Godin redline 1 (1 humbucker) for right around what TS has.
Seriously though for $250 you can get a decent guitar if you know what you are looking for. Right now at rondomusic.com you can get an Agile AL-3010 SE for 299.99, brand new. Those are seriously great guitars for the price.
Just saying explore your options and ask many questions.
Gibson-DC standard, PRS S2 Mira, Ibanez RG570, Ibanez rg1550m, Fender HWY1 tele, Reverend Manta Ray 290, Charvel Pro mod
Marshall JCM 2000 DSL100, Peavey 5150, Peavey Classic 30 2-2x12's

Had my GRX20 for a decade, and still play it every day. I want to change the pickups, the nut, and the tuners...but after so long and so much use, I'm not in the biggest hurry. It's my main axe in 2 bands as well.

A damn good guitar if you take care of it, even better when you upgrade parts a little. I adore the neck on mine. Easily the best sub-$200 guitar I've ever owned in 15 years of collecting and trading guitars.

GRX20 or Special II are not an upgrade from your Squier. They are all starter guitars. Buy something better. It makes no sense to have two starter guitars that both need upgrading soon.

My GRX20 sounds a little bit muddy and it is sort of awkward to play sitting on a bed or something due to the jack location. It isn't unbearable but it annoys me. I suppose that all depends on the cable you use though.

It is a decent guitar if you are just starting out but I don't think I could recommend it to you. I mean you could buy a used one with pocket change practically so I wouldn't touch it with a $250 budget.

I just recently picked up a 2013 Gibson SG Standard and the 57 Classics REALLY show you how muddy the GRX20's pickups are.
