So recently I've been getting into Johnny Marr, the legendary 'Smiths' guitar player.
His chord structures, colorful riffs and EPIC TONE have really started inspiring me.

Just wanted to know what UG users thought of him, especially users outside the UK. Perhaps people in the US would know him better for his role in the rock band 'Modest Mouse'

So Pit, What do you think of him?

Haha, The Smiths are as well known as Modest Mouse in the U.S. (except maybe that is a little dependent on the age of who you are asking)....I personally love everything I've heard that Johnny Marr has been involved with, but a lot of people think of him like an 'indie' artist or something and don't really like him.

kudos on shunning our lord almighty mr cameron. other than that i have no anything for him at all.

That's awesome I didn't know how well received The Smiths were over your way especially since they had such a short career. But yeah Johnny's the man what he did with The Cribs was also brilliant.

I don't always post on UG, but when I do, I post in the Pit. Stay thirsty my friends.

Thank you. I made this point in the alt/indie chat and people thought I was insane.

I agree Morrissey is an idiot and only getting worse... However the Morrissey-Marrs duo can only be considered as amazing, just imagine what they'd have accomplished if The Smiths lasted longer

I'm so tempted to start taking pictures of the meat I eat, posting it on Twitter and hashtagging it #morrissey.

Musician's personalities has no bearings on whether or not their music is good.

Smiths are good Morrissey is a douche. That's like an undisputed fact.

Morrissey's a monumental bellend but he does write some beautiful lyrics.

And Marr's my favourite guitarist ever.

That's not the point I was making. What I was trying to say is imagine if they continued making albums together. The legacy they'd have left would be even more incredible than what they've already achieved together.

I was not making a judgement about the music based on those who made it.

I really don't care about him or the Smiths.

It's cool that some people like the Smiths and Johnny Marr; I don't. That's also cool.

Not liking Johnny Marr is definitely not cool

But know I get you, it's understandable, some of their stuff can be pretty tailored to specific tastes. Three years ago The Smiths were horrible to my ears

Much respect. Is he still with Modest Mouse? Is Modest Mouse still with Modest Mouse?
I worked on one of their videos, great day!

The Smiths are a mediocre bunch of lads and Johnny Marr can't play to save his life.

No, he did We Were Dead, then one tour, I think.

Modest Mouse is still with Modest Mouse, they're working on a new album.

I fucking love Johnny Marr's work on We Were Dead.

Yeah, when I saw them he was cool as ****. They were a headliner at Sasquatch and after songs he would just light up a cig and talk with the crowd for a minute or so and take a drink. So much natural awesomeness from that dude.

Very cool. Johnny was a little uncomfortable with the costume though.
They all were actually.

Was Fruciante in the Smiths or Modest Mouse?
What rating were you referring to?

he's great but I think he and the smiths had potential to take it one extra notch. If he had varied his guitar riffs and lines a bit further and experimented a bit more I think they could've been even better.

I don't like The Smiths (mainly Morrisey's fault), so I haven't really heard him there. Only heard one Modest Mouse song (I think, can't remember what it was called though), and that was fine.

So I can't really have an opinion on him because I've barely heard him <_<.

No, marrs played with frusciante. I think people who like marr think he's a little more outstanding than I believe him to be.
#36
Haven't heard much Smiths but I do like the guy. I think the only full album I've heard with him on is when he was with The Cribs. Also can't believe I'm the first one here to mention The Cribs ha.

Marr is great. And The Smiths are strange, as they're the only band that I like and at the same time hate the frontman.
