Hey guys,

I've decided to buy a portable audio recorder to make recordings of rehearsals, live shows, and anything else I don't need a super professional quality recording of. My budget is just about $100. The two I'm trying to decide between are the Zoom H1 and the Tascam DR-07MKII. I was hoping you guys could help me figure out which one will work better for me. There are links below to the manufacturer websites.

Thanks!

Personal preference would be the Tascam, but with that sort of kit it's more about the specs. The quality won't be much different from one to the other, so go with the one which has the most memory, best battery life etc.
Gibson LP Traditional, LP GT, LP Studio, SG Standard x2
Barber Tone Press > EHX Worm >TC Polytune > EXH Glove > EHX East River Drive > Zoom G3 > TC Spark Mini Booster
EVH 5150 III LBXII
Jet City JCA22H

Errmmm...try them both out and see which you like better?

How? I can do that with guitars, amps, etc. but I can't think of a music store that would allow me to just try one of these.

Bring your guitar and amp (or borrow one of their better amps). Then, record on it. Of course, they may not let you do that, but it'd be worth a shot. Frankly, the good stores wouldn't mind you trying them out, provided you were careful.

i have used a zoom h4n before. (it is not on your list i know, but i guess its a reccomendation for zoom).
I found it incredibly easy to use and it resulted in a decent sound when there was a sound to be heard. If i wasn't playing guitar or banging on kitchen utensils there was a big earth hum/hiss type sound.

zooms generally a good brand though.
