I just put a set of new strings on my tele and noticed some fret buzz - mostly on the first five frets. So I adjusted my action until it went away, or until most of it went away.

Now my action is disgustingly high, I can fit nearly 4 credit cards under the strings starting at the fifth fret.

Any advice other than lower the saddles? Should I try moving them forward? Or will that only affect my intonation

This is only on my low E string by the way.

Don't move them forward, that will mess up the intonation. You need to check neck relief, it might need a slight truss rod adjustment.

FYI there's a setup thread top of the page.

you're going to want to check neck relief.

fret the low E first fret, at the same time,
fret the Low E last fret, where the neck and body meet.

with both places held, look at the middle frets.
does the string lay on the fret wire there?

is there gap there? if so, what fits in the gap?
1 pick, 2 picks??

check and post back.

Jenny needs to sow her wild oats with random Gibsons and Taylors she picks up in bars before she settles down with a PRS.

Doesn't lay on the fret wire there, but there's not even enough space for a single pick to fit through

ok it's safe to turn the truss rod

1/4 turn counter clockwise. that's a small amount.
dont force the turn and let the guitar settle in tune after.

then post back here.

The buzz went from and to worse.

I think I may have adjusted it too much, every note on my bottom 4 strings have bad buzz

so you turned 1/4 turn counter clockwise and now you have more buzz on the first few strings?

that's very unusual.

so measure, using the instructions, and tell me what kind of relief you have at the middle frets when holding the two
places on the Low E.

what fits in the middle gap now?

Yes, it was counter clockwise.

I turned it th opposite way after my lesson to compensate, and now theres only fret buzz on my A string, no other string, at least not any buzz that's noticeable.

If there is any buzz it's barely there.

I've not got my guitar handy right at the moment, but I'll post back later

ok, if the buzz doesn't transmit thru the amp then it's not really considered an issue.

if the strings are broken in, the action still seems high, and turning the truss rod isnt an option, then you might want to consider a different set of strings.
maybe something a little heavier?
