Sometime in the future I think I would like to get decent programs for recording songs and putting drums to them.

I would like to be able to do the following:

Record riffs
Modify guitar tones
Add drums
Have a large choice of drum samples, guitar tones and metronome time signatures.

I am aware of programs like cubase and superior drummer, but I was wondering about some other options and setups that work well for you guys out there

thanks!

Well I like superior drummer or ezdrummer for my drums (although I'm having no luck with a snare sound for the mix I'm working on), but around here the popular one is Steven Slate Drums.
The go to DAW (to record your riffs, like Cubase) here is REAPER, it's only $60 and is just as powerful as pretty much anything else. I also found it very easy to understand because of things like having only one kind of track that can do anything rather than having specific MIDI tracks and Audio tracks and Busses etc.
For modifying guitar tones do you mean like an amp simulator? There's a bunch of good ones in the sticky here. LePou's amp sims are especially good IMO (and free), and AcmeBarGig's Headcase is without a doubt the most flexible around with the Frankenamp functions and the Builder.

Ever try the search feature of this forum or looking at stickied threads? This question has been asked numerous times and has been answered in the interface sticky. Hell, theres a post about DAWs about halfway down the page and another on page 2.
