I recently got myself a Line 6 POD HD500 after hearing really good things about it. However, when I play, I get very muddy tones. Every high gain patch I make or download sounds extremely bassy. I've tried turning the bass knob down (obviously) and even set several EQs in front and behind it. Even then it sounds bassy and hollow.

So is there anyone out there who records often with an Hd500 that has any tips for me on how to create playable high gain sounds?

Thanks!
Oh hey, I didn't see you there

Well the pod series is known for it's muddy preamps... though I can't comment on the HD series having never used one.

I have the rackmount version in my studio. I find that when recording using the "Hiway 412" cabinet works the best. It has a nice balance of bass and treble. As well as this I use the studio eq before the amp to clean things up a bit. Other than that there isn't much I could say, you can get extremely usable Hi-gain tones and personally I find that 9/10 times I prefer them over using plug ins. You really do have to tweak everything to get it sounding right but it's definitely possible.

Also what are you monitoring on? This can obviously have an impact on the bass as well as the environment you're working in.

If you'd like I'd be willing to send you some of my patches that I have used in recent recordings and mixes.

What are you listening to it through?

For a general tip, go into the system I/O and set Input 1 to Guitar and Input 2 to Variax, the default has input 2 set to Same and that doubles your input, causing clipping, muddiness, etc etc.

Another general tip is to head into the amp/cab deep editing perimeters and adjust the low cut frequencies (default set to 20hz) and the "thump" perimeter. Both of which can cause boominess and mud.

Also, like the above poster noted. The Hiway 412 cab isn't too bassy. I like the greenback 25 and treadplate cab as well.

yeah make sure you have the variax connection turned completely off

I preferred to X3 when I listened in the music shop the HD was better on cleaner tones for sure But for Metal the X3 has more amps more tones and there are sound more lively IMO. maybe when more updates come and the HD gets a 5150 and others it may change.
