Im looking for a better distortion mainly to use for playing black metal styles, mainly atmospheric and cascadian i guess. Right now i use a big muff boosted and with added gain from a timmy and it does sound good, but i feel like it should be like raw-er.
Im looking into maybe a whiteface reissue rat, or a boss hm 2 since i think the whole chainsaw sound might be good for it too, any better suggestions? Ill go used and i guess somewhere under 200$ would be preferred.
Also any other good pedal recommendations for this style? i already have 2 delays phasor and noise gate. Im thinking a good ethereal reverb too right?

Get an HM-2. I have one. It sounds awful, and it is wonderful.

Boost it with an OD for possible unusable noise.

You also can't go wrong with a SS Peavey like a Bandit or a Supreme/XXL if you need more power.

Ampeg VH140s are also cheap tools for the job.

The Rat should do for the type of BM you play. Neige from Alcest uses a Rat. I think the HM-2 has a bit too much filth for what you do.

Not really, he's not doing early norse stuff. He would probably still need his Fender cleans for what he's doing.

To be quite honest, a Boss MT-2 actually does a decent job of pulling off black metal tone (that's about all it's good for, actually, hehe.)

I play a lot of black metal and do it through a 6505+ (I know, I know, that's supposed to be a 'core rig, right?). It does an AMAZING job of capturing the sound I want. It's all in the playing and chordal arrangements.

I have a Boss HM-2 as well, but I don't use it for black metal style songs. Indeed, it has a putrid, gross, filthy, and obscene sound -- but to me it screams DEATH metal, not black metal. It's a bit too thick for black metal.

But then again, anyone who is overly concerned about the tone they're getting for black metal doesn't quite get the point, does he/she?

If it works for you, it works, right! I recommend trying everything you can get your hands on.

YOUI HAVE ALL GIVEN HIM WRONG ADVICE... Mr Keith Merrow is here to show you how black metal is done..... XD

That's still basically his usual chug-core stuff with some random tremolo picking parts thrown in.

Yeah i know it isnt really the ideal amp for it, but it still does sound great when boosted enough. I will eventually get an amp more suited to the higher gain stuff i play but for the moment this suits me better.
And ill pass on slashing the speakers, Mine is kinda nice.
But everyone else, i did some more research and the guy from agalloch uses a rat so ill probably end up getting one of those, and i have a buddy who has a hm 2, unfortunately he lives an hour away so ill ask him how it does black metal. And that alter ego one actually does look pretty cool

It's black metal you're supposed to do it wrong, look at the first burzum albums he tried to purposefully record the guitar as shitty as possible

BURZUM!!! That is all.

But yeah, the Rat is probably a great idea, I would definitely go with that.

Take a look at Rocktron's Third Angel pedal. It does that sort of stuff rather well.
