Hello UG Forums. I know this is my first post which means I probably won't get a lot of help(at least that's how it goes on most forums), but I'd like some advice. I currently own a Fender Cyber Twin. The amp is nice, has tubes in the pre-amp section, but it's "modeling" portion just doesn't seem up to par with me. I'm debating whether I should purchase a Line 6 Pod HD500 to get better tones out of it, or if I should buy a whole new amp. The amp I was looking at was the Line 6 Spider IV HD150.

For those who are gonna ask what kind of tones I want, I love really over-driven Mesa-style tones, but I also love the sound of Orange amplifiers. Obviously, I can't afford either of these, so modeling seems to be the way to go.

**EDIT** After going back and reading the rules like I should have, I'm from the Chicago area. My budget is ~$600 or less. Also I mainly play in my bedroom, but I occasionally gig in a friends garage, and on a very rare occasion at a small venue by my house. I'll read from now on, I promise.

Thanks,
Adam

There is a Mesa 50 caliber 1x12 combo for <$600 on www.guitarcenter.com/used. It is no rectifier, but it is really nice amp.

If your lucky you can score a mesa rectoverb combo for $600 on there.

EDIT: There are a few mesa DC-5 combos for <$500 these are really similar to the mark series of amps

I was going to say 'Welcome to UG' but I see you have been here awhile

So....Welcome to GGnA

Thanks for filling in the blanks for us. What little experience I have with the CyberTwin says that I would agree with you especially for higher gain tones. My first amp was actually a Fender GDEC. Cool little unit - but limited in what it can do. I hear the new Mustangs are much better but still lacking in high gain tones.

The Pod HD500 is a fantastic unit I hear. You will still need to run it through something unless you are just going to use headphone - in which case it might be a bit overkill.

The ideas Robb came up with are really good - especially if you want a strait up tube amp.

If you are still interested in the modeling route - than I recommend the Peavey Vypyr 60 tubed unit. I love mine. The Recto setting is br00tal.

Hope that helps,

Also - steer clear of the Spider IV

Yeah - I got my Vypyr 60 for $315 and I've seen them as low as $250

Quick craigslist check gleaned these:

Those are not in order of preference. It is the most recent to oldest posting going back to last week. I'd go for that Rectoverb followed closely by the JSX (even though I prefer head/cab over combos). I'm also not sure if your budget includes selling the CyberTwin or what.

oh well....you get the idea. Here is an affordable cab too:

Thanks so much for the great responses guys! Honestly, I really appreciate it! Anywho, one little kicker that forgot to mention, is that I have about $340 in Amazon.com credit that I would like to use.

Right now, Amazon has a used Vypyr T60 for $379.99. So I'm gonna go to Guitar Center later today and play one, and if I like it, I'll order it!

^ if it is new and comes with a warranty I'd say that is good deal.

'Most' of the issues revolving around the Vypyrs have been firmware related - in which you download the latest firmware to the amp. I say that in case the one you get is older.

If you are going to GC to try out I highly suggest taking your own guitar even though that is inconvenient. I also suggest you download the Vypyr user manual and read through how to operate it. Not that it is complicated but it will make the demo process go smoother - and faster.

Good luck

I decided to go with the Boss ME-70. Was that a good decision? Haha. I played it at Guitar Center and loved it.

Edit: I'm just gonna run it through the clean channel of t Cyber Twin.

The Cyber twin has way better modeling than the Boss pedal. I'd be taking it back to the store about....now.

I like the distortion tones a lot more on the ME-70 a lot more though.

As long as you like it that's fine, but if you don't like the Cyber twin sell it and get something that fits you better.

Gotta be honest.

Not. What. I. Expected.

But - hey. If it works, it works. Congrats

Haha, honestly, it's very frustrating because I jammed with a friend in his garage today(just guitar and drums), and I found a tone that I really like. So now I'm just totally lost. Oh well.
