Budget? - 500-1000usd, flexible

Genres? - Punk, pop, indie, metal, black metal, country, jazz, etc

New or Used? - Used preferred

Home or Gig? - Gig

Closest City? - South Bend, IN - Michiana area. I also frequent the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek area, and Lansing area in Michigan.

Current Gear? - A GFS floor tuner, lots of cables, and a nearly completely fixed up Epiphone Les Paul Jr.

I'm looking for something versatile, great cleans up to black and death metal. I prefer an amp head so that my cabinet and speaker choice can be flexible in the future.

I literally have no gear left, except a tuner and a busted guitar, as times have been tough, but money is slowly rolling back in, so this is more of a long term gear grab, rather than a tax return check burning a hole in my pocket.

I've considered Mesa, maybe an old mark III, but I am open to all suggestions and consider each one. 500-1000usd is my budget for an amp (head preferred), tubes if a replacement is needed, and mods if also needed. I will work out cabinet budget later.

If I missed something please just yell at me, thanks for your help.

Looking for a modeler, or no? Cause obviously Vypyr Tube suggestion...

If not, do look at a Peavey JSX, serious suggestion.

Black metal is kind of the outlier there, but you can definitely make it work with a lot of EQing and boosting. Or just throw something nasty like an HM-2 on top, then you'll have no problem.
Spin 'round carousel when your horse isn't screwed in.

Full tube amp head. Vypyr Tube is under what I am looking for.

Black metal tone isn't something that I'm really pushing for it's not hard to obtain IMO.

Mesa Mark IV or EVH 5150 iii mini (both used)

They are both really great amps, but you may or may not need a boost/distortion pedal with the EVH.

i have a IV long head and love it.

i am trying to find the right iii at the right price. its not easy.

some of the different stripes are quite a bit different than IV's. not very modern. but this is largely based on videos, because i haven't seen one at the right price and right time otherwise it would be sitting right on top of the IV.

Yeah the stripe seems to make a bit of difference. The price between the III and IV doesn't seem much different.

I'm probably just gonna save my money and see what comes up in the future. I liked the III red stripe quite a bit, from the vid I watched.

the IV is a solid amp though. i got mine freshly tubed for $875 on CL.

Yeah, seems like every III goes for around that, they are different amps, but wouldn't going for the IV be a better option?

IV would be better. much more versatile. i love mine, if you can find one, go for it. they take time to tweak in, but are worth it. go for MKIV.
