I love bands like the smiths, the arctic monkeys, the libertines etc. i am currently playing through a fender mustang iii and a fender baja telecaster. I want to find a guitar that can give me the 'indie' tone.(basically johnny marrs) i have about £600 to spend. Can anyone recommend any guitars? Thanks in advance.

Your tele should be just fine for those sounds.
Maybe look at the Epiphone 335/DOT/Sheraton if you really want a new guitar

i'm not too well up on johnny marr but doesn't/didn't he use jaguars and jazzmasters?

for that budget i'd probably try to get a japanese one (but bear in mind, i think the pickups are just strat pickups under bigger covers).

Never tried a jaguar or a jazzmaster so don't quote me on any of that

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.

Get a new amp. Baja Telecasters are decent guitars that should be able to get you indie (rock) sounds any day of the week.

I'd suggest a Fender Blues Junior or similar.

My Uncles giving me his fender tube amp but the only controls it has is volume and gain. Should i get pedals instead to go with this or a new amp?

^ which amp is it? I'm guessing you mean it has no master volume.

Jazzmasters and Jaguars are common in that scene, see if you can find some for that price.

Depends what it is, but if there are really no tone controls I'd buy an EQ pedal. I swear every guitar amp has tone controls? What if it's not a guitar amp?

But anyway, tell us what the amp is!!

'Indie' isn't a genre Alternative is the genre, 'indie' is the nature of a record label.

Anyhoo, as far as guitars go the answer is any Fender solid body with single coils or any Gibson hollow body with P-90s or humbuckers. Could split the difference and get a semi-hollow Fender with P-90s, Wide Range humbuckers or a mix of single coils and regular humbuckers. Really, it doesn't matter. Jazzmasters, Jaguars, Telecasters, Thinline Telecasters, Telecaster Deluxe, Telecaster Custom, Strats, ES-345, ES-355, Casinos, Rickenbackers, standard Gretsch designs; all of them are appropriate. You mention Johnny Marr, and he's used all of 'em.

The more important thing is the amp. You need something like a pushed tweed Fender or a Vox; Plexi-style Marshalls can work too if you run them pretty bright.
Usually, the Fenders that have limited controls have inherently very bright tones. They can possibly be too bright. Buying an EQ pedal is never a bad idea, as you can either put it before your amp to shape your guitar's tone or you can put it in the amp's effect loop to change the tone of the preamp. It's standard practice in this kind of music to have a basic overdrive pedal, or at least a clean boost, too; look for things like the Boss Blues Driver or DigiTech Screamin' Blues, since they are designed to have softer clipping so long as you keep the gain low and they don't push your signal level as much as something like a Tube Screamer or Bad Monkey.
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.

The Baja is a great indie rock guitar, I'd settle on the amp situation first!

More info on this mysterious amp would be good, if not Vox AC15/30, Laney VC15/30. Fender Blues jr/Hot Road deluxe, Orange AD30 TC (top budget)

More info needed!

You already have a thread in the proper forum--Electric Guitar. Use that one.
Feel free to call me Kyle.
