Hi, I'm looking to buy a new or used amp after I sell my Marshall MG100hdfx.
I don't know much about amps so I thought I would ask for some suggestions.

I play mostly alternative rock and pop/punk (Paramore, All Time Low, Green Day) and occasionally metalcore (The Devil Wears Prada, Haste The Day).

For $500 you're not going to need a distortion pedal, your amp's distortion will be sufficient.

As for the bands you have listed, I would look at a Jet City 20watt combo or even the 50w head, but if you are still new and learning, a Peavey Vypyr 60 tube combo with a sanpera foot pedal could be a good start to nail all of those tones plus more.

As for my Jet City suggestion, I think that would be the best route in terms of tone, but I don't remember how much the 20w combo costs.

Check out the Peavey Vypyr Tube 60, it's like $399-ish. It's a real tube amp but it also has effects and is great for rock/metal tones.

No it is a hybrid amp, SS front end and a tube power section

You can get a used Marshal DSL combo for $400-500.

The head versions of these amps hardly go under $500, at least on Guitar Center's website.

Bugera 333 (or it's XL variations) and 6262 are other options. I also recently saw a few Peavey 3120s at $450. I guess it just depends on how much versatility you want (independent EQ of a Peavey ultra versus the one set of eq on the DSL).

My suggestions just assume that you're looking for a head, since you said it in the original post.

Loop 2 (FX loop)-Line6 M9, TC Spark Mini. Loop 2 into mxr 10band. All into a Peavey Triple XXX 212, Ibanez IL15.

It's easy to hate on them, but the Blackstar HT40, you can find them used for $500 and will find tremendous tonal range there.

I see them quite often for <$500 used even on GC used site.

The JCM2000 DSL is much better sounding than the Peavey XXX/3210 even with the shared EQ section.

Also look at used Krank Chadwick heads, they run $400+

Peavey Ultra Plus, one on GC used for $425, i picked up a "broken" one for 225, replaced the main fuse and tubes, it was all good. Excellent for metal, and crunch channel will do the other genres fine.
