Hi, I'm looking to buy a new or used amp after I sell my Marshall MG100hdfx.
I don't know much about amps so I thought I would ask for some suggestions.

I play mostly alternative rock and pop/punk (Paramore, All Time Low, Green Day) and occasionally metalcore (The Devil Wears Prada, Haste The Day).

And if anyone could recommend some good distortion pedals I would greatly appreciate that as well. Thanks.

For $500 you're not going to need a distortion pedal, your amp's distortion will be sufficient.

As for the bands you have listed, I would look at a Jet City 20watt combo or even the 50w head, but if you are still new and learning, a Peavey Vypyr 60 tube combo with a sanpera foot pedal could be a good start to nail all of those tones plus more.

As for my Jet City suggestion, I think that would be the best route in terms of tone, but I don't remember how much the 20w combo costs.

What country are you in?
What kind of output do you require?
It's an opinion. It's subjective. And I'm right, anyway.

Check out the Peavey Vypyr Tube 60, it's like $399-ish. It's a real tube amp but it also has effects and is great for rock/metal tones.

No it is a hybrid amp, SS front end and a tube power section
Not a bad amp, but get it right

I'd honestly fap to anything with a set of genitals as long as I find it aesthetically appealing.

The head versions of these amps hardly go under $500, at least on Guitar Center's website.

Bugera 333 (or it's XL variations) and 6262 are other options. I also recently saw a few Peavey 3120s at $450. I guess it just depends on how much versatility you want (independent EQ of a Peavey ultra versus the one set of eq on the DSL).

My suggestions just assume that you're looking for a head, since you said it in the original post.
Charvel So-Cal (SH6TB/N, killswitch), Jackson RR5FR (TB6/Jazz, Drop C). Joyo pxl pro.
Loop1=Crybaby from hell, Boss PS-5, Seymour Duncan 805 or Green Rhino, EQD Hoof or Earthbound Audio Super Collider. Loop 1 into ISP Decimator II.
Loop 2 (FX loop)-Line6 M9, TC Spark Mini. Loop 2 into mxr 10band. All into a Peavey Triple XXX 212, Ibanez IL15.

It's easy to hate on them, but the Blackstar HT40, you can find them used for $500 and will find tremendous tonal range there.

I see them quite often for <$500 used even on GC used site.

The JCM2000 DSL is much better sounding than the Peavey XXX/3210 even with the shared EQ section.

Also look at used Krank Chadwick heads, they run $400+

Peavey Ultra Plus, one on GC used for $425, i picked up a "broken" one for 225, replaced the main fuse and tubes, it was all good. Excellent for metal, and crunch channel will do the other genres fine.
