I have a project for a class that I'm doing about romanticism and metal music and I'm looking for songs with romantic poetry or allusions in the lyrics. The obvious first choice is Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Iron Maiden but other than that I'm having trouble finding any.

Pit, I turn to you in my hour of need.
Currently Playing:
Arma 2/3, Dayz, GW2, GTA, Splinter Cell, ESO, FF:X, Pokemon X
all of it

edit: i simply mean that metal is far less grounded in reality than pop. you don't hear people singing about phones and clubs in pop music, there's more ridiculous lyric topics in many metal songs. it's part of the reason i like it.

You are having trouble finding metal songs about other-wordly things? Are you talking about the "romantic" period of time like the 1800s? Or are you talking about romantic songs?

The Ripper by Judas Priest is about Jack the Ripper, that was in the 1800's.

Not sure what you mean. If you mean poetic, I'd suggest the Omnivium album by Obscura, then pick and choose a song.

I'm cockblocked regularly by my appearance and personality.
amorphis use the kalevala regularly as a source for themes and lyrics.
I meant romantic in the sense of the writing style in the early 1800's, but I'll start looking into the suggestions.

Alexander the Great and Powerslave - Maiden (Alexander and Egyptian references)
Queen is in Love - Yngwie
Mr. Crowley - Ozzie (E. Crowley reference)
Last in Line - Dio (witch reference)

Those all have allusions in them, or references to people, places, myths, etc.

Sadly this is Ultimate-guitar, not Simple-guitar. We can't help you.

From what I gather, you want lyrics that have a euphoric and poetic vibe.

Arcane Sun - Arcane Sun
Adramelech - Psychostasia
Aeternus - ...And So The Night Became
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
Cynic - Focus
Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Of Lachrymose

I thought this at first, but I'm not sure.

TS, could you give us an example of these lyrics? Just post lyrics or something.
I'd imagine quite a few modern black metal bands would have Romantic influences. Perhaps one could consider Wolves In The Throne Room, as they reject modern life and advocate a return to more natural ways?

And, of course, given some of William Blake's poems in Songs Of Innocence And Experience, I'm sure quite a few black metal bands identify with his works. If you're interested in something more than "hail Satan" stuff, you might wanna check out Deathspell Omega. They have a trilogy of albums dealing with the relationship between man, god, and the devil.

And, of course, there's Ulver's album Themes From William Blake's The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell as well.

Mr. Crowley - Ozzie (E. Crowley reference)
