What are your thoughts of tipping at bars?

It is expected that you tip a person, usually quite generously, for preparing your drink, which plenty of the time is opening a bottle.

I always tip tbh, and i realize that the tip makes up the majority of the persons income at a bar, but unless its a relatively complex drink, it seems a little unnecessary when i think about the big picture. There are a lot of harder jobs that require more expertise that you never tip for.

Thoughts? How much do you normally tip?

I tip usually a dollar a drink. Sometimes I'll order a bucket, which is five beers, and a sixth one free. I take the other five beers that aren't in me mits in chip/token form. In this case I leave a five spot. You should always take care of your bartenders, in turn they will take care of you.

I feel that very recently we had an identical thread to this.

I usually tip $1 per beer/rye&coke and $2/3 per mixed drink depending on the complexity (Amaretto and OJ is just getting you $2, $3 if you make it strong for me).

I'm not even saying this as a joke, use the god damn search bar. This thread pops up like every week ffs.

Americans have an obligation to tip for some stupid reason, everyone else realizes that servers only deserve tips if they do a good job and earn it.

Depending on the establishment bartenders have a lot of responsibility. They generally are likeable and hard working. There are a lot of factors behind bartending besides opening a beer. Its like me judging your job by your changing the ink in the printer. Anybody could do it, super simple, not worth payment for.

I loathe the idea of tipping at bars. I loathe tipping in general, but bars even more so. At least with a restaurant you are paying someone for being polite and attentive to your needs, but the idea of paying someone extra money because they poured my Guinness from a bottle into a glass for me is absurd.

Exactly. This woman brought me my beer, mind you, she wasn't exactly pleasant. Kind of ignored me on two separate occasions. So whatever, I'm done my beer, she comes by, I give her a twenty. She splits it so she's holding two dollars in one hand, and 13 dollars in another.

Didn't even think twice and took it all. I didn't even realize she wanted a tip, I thought she was aware of how awful she is at serving beer. How about accidentally dropping something in front of me? Whatever happened to customer service?

Actually, we had another waitress who wore an incredibly tight, and short, dress. Showed huge amounts of cleavage and bent over at the waist every time you'd ask her for something. She made me mad that she was just trying to get tips out of me.

I ended up calling her out on it, and she giggled and said something like "Hee hee, you got me" then winked at me. I think I gave her a 10 dollar tip.

How does not tipping make you a bore? If anything it should mean the opposite, that $1 you spend extra every drink could probably buy you 3 more drinks by the end of the night.

It's not just Europe. It's pretty much everyone but the US, because it's a ******ed system.

shits expensive enough, its the employers job to pay their staff anyway, hence the high prices in pubs, it all evens out

I could never have imagined you getting a round of drinks at the pub, but since Gavingate (as I am now calling it) it seems anything goes.
