I'm bored and I've been listening to a bunch of "Tr00" Metalcore bands these days, or "Zero Wave" if you like. I expect most people consider the First Wave of Metalcore to be Killswitch Engage or something so I feel "Zero Wave" is a better name. So anyway I decided to make a thread to group together Oldskoolmetalcore things.

Here are some great bands from the Zero Wave of metalcore (or in the style thereof):
(* = Recommended)

Any more bands I've missed... just post 'em. Do what the fuq you like.

Converge is great - Earth Crisis and Zao too. Top stuff. I don't get why there's so much contention between fans of 'Old' and 'new' metalcore - I understand how a Converge fan might not like, for example, Asking Alexandria or Attack! Attack!, but the stuff like August Burns Red, Oh, Sleeper, that kinda thing, isn't it close enough in mentality to the 1st wave - Hatebreed, Converge, that kinda thing - to still enjoy?

No it's not. Also putting Hatebreed and Converge next to each other like that is horrible.
I'm an asshole.

Not really. 1st Wave is pretty much just bad Shai Hulud worship mixed with At the Gates riffs. It's barely hardcore, where as Zero Wave has tonnes of Hardcore in it. They had good intentions... but kinda missed the whole point.

Doesn't have the heaviness of the other stuff, but it is pretty influential none the less.

Not a band I ever really liked that much, not sure why because I should. Lot's of elements I like, but they just don't do much for me.

It's more that I forgot to add them, not that I'm playing the favoritism card xD I was just saying. They're added now, no need to get yo' panties in a twist ^_^

Also it's songs like this (Cave In 1999) That make me think that maybe modern Chugcore is more akin to Zero Wave Metalcore than the KsE style stuff, I mean check out from around 1:30 till about 2:10:

And yeah, I remember that band, awesome stuff. When I first heard them I was told it was modern screamo, but it does sound pretty damn metalcore.

You should take Duck Duck Goose off that list..
Also I always thought of HHIG as crust.. but people should listen to them so they should stay.

HHIG is crust. Definitely not metalcore.

Takaru rules so ****ing much. It definitely falls on the line between metalcore and skramz. If you're digging Takaru, check out Zann. Very similar. Three Years in the Desert is a great album.

Zann rules. One of the first screamo bands I listened to back in like '09. Man.

What do we think about bands like WSS who at least attempted (probably without realising it) to bring back some hardcore sound into the modern metalcore trend.

Do you think there is space for a Tr00 Metalcore Revival?

Yeah, I was basically wondering if a new era of tr00 core was capable of existing in the mainstream along side those crappy numetalcore bands.

Also I bought one of Cave In's Space Rock albums.

Is actually really good.

I don't really count them as metalcore. I'm pretty sure by definition, it can't be.

I'm not arguing it, but in my mind, this is the exact same as calling all of those scenecore bands post hardcore and screamo. Or Alesana emo. They're just...not.
#30
Well yeah, I tend to refer to them as scenecore or chugcore or atthegatescore depending on the band.

Mostly for Feed the Rhino who are supporting... they pretty much sound like ETID if ETID were British.

That actually kind of reminded me of Cave In. I thought it was pretty cool! The name threw me off for sure.

The UG I remember never had civil discussions about metalcore, what is this? I saw talk of Takaru. If you like that band, listen to Burial Year (similar members). They even do an Unbroken cover on their split with Zann. Also, Chokehold. Listen to Chokehold. And Catharsis. Also also, if you like Zann, listen to Perth Express. Then, when you're done that, listen to Acme's "To Reduce the Choir to One Soloist." It is essential. If more people listened to Kamikaze Missions by Backstabbers Inc. the world would be a better place.

There are still quite a few bands that are doing a somewhat modern take on metalcore, albeit with a huge amount of influence taken from the likes of One Eyed God Prophecy or Systral. React With Protest! seems to have a lot of them on their roster (June Paik, Titan, Tempest, Resurrectionists, Trainwreck, Battle of Wolf, etc.). If you like old metalcore, you'd probably be at home listening to a lot of those bands.

I'm glad I found this thread. I've been looking for some more old school Metalcore bands. I'm familiar with Zao & Converge (Zao actually got me into heavy music partially), but I'd been looking for more bands like them.

Edit:
Just curious. Has anyone found any "tr00" Metalcore on bandcamp or reverbnation? Anything I can download on a site like that, basically? I've found a lot of what I would call "Melodic Metalcore" (think As I Lay Dying, KsE, etc.), but not a ton of Metallic Hardcore.

Edit2:
Oh, and I recently found a good definition of Metalcore (which also differentiates from Melodic Metalcore). http://rateyourmusic.com/genre/Metalcore/

Yes, but it's confusing to a lot of people as to why we try to differentiate bands from the '00s and bands from the '90s, whereby bands from the '90s are Metalcore (aka Metallic Hardcore, "tr00" Metalcore) and bands from the '00s are Melodic Metalcore (aka not "tr00" Metalcore). I just spent several PMs with someone on a different forum, trying to explain the differences. Anyway, point is, it helps to have a definition that differentiates between the two.
#40
You can't really stick every numetalcore band into the melodic metalcore umbrella though. I'd rather just call them modern metalcore or something.
