Even if you tried, the progression would not let you use E Aeolian.

E aeolian and G Ionian (G major) share the exact same set of notes: G A B C D E F#

The difference between these two modes is found only in the chords that are used under them. E aeolian is a the natural minor mode centered on Em and G ionian is the major mode centered on G.

Don't overthink this. If it sounds good, it IS good.

well seeing as those are all the same 7 notes... you should probably play whichever 3-4 of those 7 are in the chord at the moment.

Really, just avoid playing a 4th above the root on major chords and you'll be halfway there.

You just play the G major scale over all of it.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.
