I plan on ebonizing the fretboard on my Ibanez VBT700, light rosewood + white guitar = got to go. I'm going to clean it off first with naphtha like Stewmac suggests, but should I worry about sanding it? Why or why not? Appreciate the help in advance!
Don't use naptha. It'll just dry the board out.

You also can't stain rosewood very well. It will last a while but eventually the stain will lift and then you're just left with black marks on your fingers.

Condition the fretboard properly and it will darken in colour a lot. The actual difference in colour between very dark, properly conditioned rosewood and normal ebony is very little. Any entirely black ebony you see is, vastly more often than not, dyed.
Yes, I know everything. No, I can't play worth a damn.
