I was in a land where men force women to hide their facial features,
And here in the west it's just the same but they're using make-up veils.

what do you make of that? fair assessment or are they two totally different things?

Make-up is used to accentuate facial features, not mask them.

pretty much sums it up.

make-up can also be a form of expression/art.

unfairly trivializes the struggle that women face in the middle east & elsewhere. they're not two totally different things, but they're certainly not on the same scale.

Similar, but the difference is that western women are influenced subconsciously to wear makeup in an effort to be accepted and integrated into western culture, whereas women in the middle east are forced to wear them to avoid a beating.

Better than both: european women who barely wear makeup because they just plain don't need to.

I realize that's a joke, but that's kind of my question. do we impose an aesthetic for people to live up to? is it self-expression? or is it vanity that women have been pressured into by our culture? and in that way is it not a mask if they are "putting their face on" which, mind you, is what older women actually called it at least in some places.

well you can identify a staggering difference objectively. muslim women in certain places of the world are physically forced to wear veils. women here face a high social pressure to wear make up.

however there is an important similarity -- both are forms of objectification.

1) yes
2) yes
3) yes
4) it's a mask that they ultimately wear by choice

Also, while there is a pressure for women to get all cosmeticized via models and such, there is also a growing acceptance of deviation from that norm, like plus sized spokespeople and stuff. And girls aren't ostracized from society for not wearing makeup. So yeah, I do not see a connection between the two except for that they involve women feeling societal pressure to do something. But so what?

It's really just another social norm, imo. It's a shame females are pressured into wearing it but they aren't actually forced to which is the difference. The statement is kind of like complaining that we're "forced" to wear clean clothes.

^That joke didn't really make sense. And neither did OP's analogy.

But I do agree make-up is stupid. It's unattractive and shallow and I have no idea why so many women have bought into the idea of wearing it.
#30
There's pressure to look appealing and makeup helps with that, so some women feel insecure without it. There are also some who just like to wear it regardless of what men think cause it's fun.

It's completely minimizing the problems that women face in these countries, while at the same time spewing anti-west culture in one foul swoop, even though I (and many others) can easily say that the west's culture is vastly superior to that of these countries.
#34
I think it's analogous. I see more women who don't see makeup as a requirement now but it's still a thing.

Same situation on different levels

society has expectations of everyone.

What the makeup is used for is irrelevant (to mask, to accentuate, to express oneself) - what matters is that people think there's something wrong with you when you don't wear any
