Ok, pretty straight forward, I don't have enough money to buy a Gibson but I also don't want a Chinese fake . The Japanese made copy's like Tokai are pretty good but this could be subjective of course.

Many thanks.

Epiphones aren't crap. You just don't like them, for whatever reason.

It depends what Tokai you're looking at and your budget.

Of course it's subjective.

Play one and find out.

PM Gregs1020 and ask if be can find you any older MIJ Copies.

I bought his Burny and it's my favourite Les Paul I have owned.

Which Epiphone? Have you had it setup professionally or in any way at all?

That's just your guitar. Don't discredit the entire brand because yours doesn't play very well.

I agree with Tom 1.0. Greg will find you something delicious.

Epiphone's don't suck. It just depends on what model you have and if it's set up.

The word on Tokai has often been that they are often better than real Gibsons. I'd definitely take a Tokai over an Epiphone. I've played a few Gibsons and only the custom shop one I played I thought was good (it was not just good though, it was perfect, amazing). Played a bunch of Epiphones and only thought one was good, (it was a demo guitar in a guitar shop with SD pickups, they wouldn't sell it but apparently a lot of people had asked).

Never played a Tokai, but on reputation alone I'd definitely take one over an Epiphone.

a MIJ tokai will generally hold it's own against most other les pauls, regardless of who made them or where.

that being said just like gibson, tokai made different levels of options at different price points. i have one of the lower models (from 1979) and it's a hell of a nice guitar.

budget?
nitro finish and fret edge binding a must? (models come with or without depending)
medium tenon build or long?
finish preference?

^ agreed, you have to know what you're getting or you can end up paying over the odds.

How are MIC Tokais? Do they compare well with Epiphone, Agile, Dillion, etc?

never tried one but i'd probably wager they are all pretty similar.

the thing about MIC guitars is if you save up a little more you can grab a nice MIJ used.

that's where i always end up.

not that the MIC stuff is bad or anything, it's just priced a bit too close for comfort compared to used MIJ offerings.

my opinion, others will vary.

i've tried very few MIC tokais but the few i tried were a bit meh, I thought. As greg says, most of those cheaper guitars are pretty similar when you get down to it. they're often made in the same factory, etc. etc. etc.

I remember googling the subject and IIRC the old MIJ and MIK Tokais give high end Epiphones and low end Gibsons a run for their money, but the newer MIC ones are pretty much on par with rest of the other reputable guitars in same price range.

This is just my hazy beer addled memory talking, take it with grain of salt.

yeah i didn't notice anything special about the non-mij tokais, to be honest i'd probably take an epi over them.

MIJ, as greg said, it depends very much on which model you're looking at. some of them cost as much as a CS gibson.

Tokai make everything from entry level Les Pauls copies in China to high-end and ultra-high end replicas in Japan.

edit: For example, the ULS470 has an MSRP of 3950 GBP.

yeah the really highest end tokais (and navigator and the like) have a spec that's arguably better than a cs gibson- brazilian rosewood, handwound pickups and mojo tone caps etc. etc..

whether they're actually better guitars, though, I dunno. I haven't tried them. And a good spec on paper doesn't always equal a good guitar (though of course it doesn't necessarily equal a bad one, either).

no but i liked the increased odds when tokai's (or fujigen, or bacchus, or edwards etc) best luthiers are putting it together.
