I bought two speakers on Ebay that the seller said were 10" CTS Alnico's from 1974. They arrived today, and they look too clean to be original. I'm sure they've been re-coned, and recently.

The cones are smooth, with no ribbing, and do not have a seam. The dust caps are semi-transparent mesh, about 2". The voice coil inside looks to be the same size as the CTS Alnico's I've seen online.

The magnet housings appear to have been sandblasted. I can barely read numbers on them (in blue). There's 137 and 7409, which I think might mean CTS and 09/1974. There's also a serial number or maybe it's a part number.

The edges of the cones have been painted or something, as they look perfect. Everything on them looks perfect.

I don't care if they've been reconed, as long as they sound the way they should. My question is: has anyone had their old CTS speakers re-coned, and did it change the sound significantly? Would the smooth cone have a significantly different sound from the ribbed?

Thanks for any replies.

you might get more replies on tgp (if you haven't asked this there already).
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

Presumably because the CCF (Combined Corksniffing Forces) of MLP and Gibson forums would rise up against them, plunging the land into war.
