Hi, I have a mashall 1960 300WATT cab with the standard GT12-75 speakers. What i want to do is take 2 of the current speakers out and replace them with V30's in the X pattern.

Correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure al i need to do is take out the old ones and drop the new V30's straight in and use the existing wiring yeah?

excellent. A lot of people swear by the X pattern setup with the GT12-75 and V30's so i might try it. I have 2 X new V30's still in box. It takes a bit of volume to get the GT12-75's to start breaking up so i hope the V30's compliment that.

You're playing loud enough to get speaker breakup on a T75 loaded 1960? I tip my hat to you sir.

lol!! Not at home tho, i give you the tip! We are luck enough to have rehearsal space out of town on a rural property so its the only time i get to open the badboy up!

But your right, it takes quite a lot to get the 75's to break up. Thanks why im hoping the V30's help a bit. If all else fails, i may buy another 2 V30's and be rid of the 75's altogether

We practice in the same setting and I crank mine loud enough that we have to mike up the drums and I still don't get any speaker breakup (I run six T75's).

I found that the Matrix GT800FX breaks them up a bit earlier than my Tube heads. Im pretty much only using my rack now for everything over tube heads. 6X T-75's!! DAMN!!!!!!

6x12 is a good format. It thickens up the T75's and puts two speakers up where I can get easier feedback. I've gigged with that setup for many a year. All the benefits of a full stack but easier to manage.
You do have to wire up the 2x12 box in a way that makes it basically unusable without the 4x12 but it's worth it. Basically you wire up the 2x12 in series for 32 ohm and parallel that up with the 4x12 set at 16 ohm for a total impedance of 10 ohms (so amp set to 8). Doing that means that every speaker gets the same power delivered to it. It's friggin wonderful.

in theory, if i had a quad full of V30's @ 8ohm and a quad full of V30's @ 16ohm and run them off the same head, the 8ohm quad would break up before the 16ohm quad yeah?

And i dont mean running them in stereo or as a full stack, i just mean individually

Yes. It would receive twice the power.

Yes. They'll break in just by using them. Probably take a couple of weeks before they are settled in properly.

And when I say the 8 ohm will receive twice the power that's with a SS amp. With a tube amp you match it with the output transformer so there is no difference. It's not exactly twice the power either but close enough.

I do recommend running 6x12 though. So rather than swapping speakers, add a cab. I've played through 2x12, 4x12 6x12 and 8x12 and 6x12 is a clear winner.

Just to be clear. This is how you wire it up. The picture makes it obvious why the power is equally distributed when wired this way.

Thanks Cathbard. Also, by speaker breakup, i just mean the volume at which they kind of hit a sweet spot and add a bit of colour. I dont mean that flubbery sound. It just sounds to me like the speakers are really being driven nice and hard to give that balls to the wall sound. Its just a particular point where you stand back and think, 'Theres my sound. My happy in pants sound'

Thanks. The JCM900 isn't stock. I modded the fizz out of it. Sounds pretty cool. I'm playing pub rock (think ACDC, Rose Tattoo) and punk. Does the deed quite nicely.
My bass player is running a 4x10 on top of a 4x12. The other guitarist's Mesa 4x12 looks like a practice amp next to our rigs. I keep telling him to get a second cab but he reckons he has trouble fitting what he has into his car already.

Ah, ok. I'm in Bendigo. My bass player used to play with some of the guys from thunderstruck I think. He played in an ACDC tribute band at one stage. All those ACDC tribute bands have an incestuous link it would seem.

I have a custom guitar for stuff where I need a trem (or the bite of EMG's) and a Yamaha SG. I needed a slide guitar and nothing beats a tele for slide.
It's got SD Quarter Pounders in it. Wellsy used a P90 in his tele but the quarter pounders are pretty close. Overall I get a quite convincing Rose Tattoo sound out of it.
The mod I did to the JCM900 makes it a clean boosted JCM800 effectively. I ripped out the clipping diodes. They're pretty good when you do that. Gets me squarely into Wellsy territory mated up with the quarter pounders.
There's pics of the other two guitars in my profile if you are interested.
