I have just acquired a Warmoth neck, and the frets are covered in the tint from the 'vintage tint' lacquer applied to the guitar. How would a fret dress be carried out to restore the frets to their chrome/nickel/ silvery appearance?
You'll get more responses in guitar building and customizing. The way I'd do it is to tape off the fretboard so only the frets are uncovered and take some very fine steel wool to them. You may also wish to tape around the pick ups to keep steel bits from getting I them.
I think the "standard" way is to score the finish with an exacto blade on the side of the fret where it meets the fingerboard. Then file a round slot into the head of a nail and use that as a scraper. If the frets were polished and shiny before the lacquer it will pop right off..
