I haven't played guitar for nearly 25 years.

25 years ago, I was trying to rip off Malmsteen, Vai, Vinnie Moore. Also Al DiMeola, Paco De Lucia and a couple of others.

In the interim, I have listened to no new guitar music at all.

Who are the new guys, and what are good examples of what they are up to now?

If I were to say that I thought 'Friday Night Live in San Francisco' and 'Flexable' were albums that really shaped me as a guitarist all those years ago, what would you recommend me to hear that's more recent?

Im sorry, I just don't see how you could argue that hardcore isn't metal. That just seems arrogant to me.

Yes, its its own kind of metal, but its still metal.

I remember John Petrucci now you mention him!

Thanks for all the pointers guys, will be checking these out.

On a completely different tack, I just 'discovered' Joe Bonamassa! Amazing. Completely different style, obviously, but so expressive!
