So I've been recording an album with my band. The producer and I decided to use the studio's amps rather than mine. This choice was made because I use a solid state Peavey 212 Studio Chorus from the 80s with a Boss Me-70 to generate my tone and sounds. I've more or less run that set up for the last five years but there were concerns about how tracks would stack and the quality of sound that would be captured. So now I have a album that is 80% recorded with a guitar sound that's built of stacked guitar tracks laid with tube amps. In the studio I ended up using a Palomino V32 head that had been hot rodded by the manufacturer and an Egnator Tweaker head. I believe the cab was one that went to/came with the Palomino.

I'm considering going for a tube amp and building a pedal board since I'd like to maintain a sound similar to what I have on the album. I'm not certain though that I can't get close enough with what I have.
I'd just like to get some opinions since I don't really know anything about tube amps.

Budgetwise I couldn't go in more than $500-ish on the head and cab.
I have to something versatile. I'm playing in what stylizes itself as a "prog" band and there is a lot of genera blending. Typically there is a 70s hard rock and stoner rock and metal sounds. Some modern rock and jazzish stuff gets thrown in.
Personally I like to get into that mid rich and boosted highs from British metal and late 80s/early 90s US hard rock too.
Guitarwise I'm generally relying on an Ibanez RG470MG with stock pickups and a imitation Strat I use for open tunings for when we get really psychedelic.
I think I'm going to throw a phaser, a chorus, a delay, a boost, an eq, and a wah in front of whatever I get.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

70's hard rock, modern metal and jazz are going to be hard to pull off with a budget of $500 even for just an amp head let alone a amp and cab.

If your music is important to you, like I'm hearing that it is, then you need to save up.

Another option would be a modeling amp. That would eleviate the need for pedals. How much do you plan on spending on pedals? Also, is this rig for gigging? Where do you live?

Before I got to your budget I was thinking something along the lines of an Egnater Renegade. Then I read your budget and started thinking of a Peavey Vypyr Tube 60 modeling amp.

We'd be happy to discuss different tube amps with you though.

You've given us most of the info that we usually look for.

I don't think the Renegade has enough gain. I had one for a while liked but I don't think it will do the job. I would try to get a jsx for best results.

Renegade 6L6 mode, scooped, with a boost?

Yeah, used JSX combo would work really well and can be had in your budget. Or maybe a Peavey Ultra+

the heaviest clips I have from an old phone on my profile. I have gotten quite of a bit better since then

There are some jsx combos out and around.

Renegade could do it boosted no worries. Might need a final pick up swap to really get there down the line, but it's a workhorse amp designed for this sort of versatility.

Thank you for your help, guys.
Yeah, this would be for gigs and Gainesville, FL is the closest city to where I live. I'm not opposed to traveling to larger cities North or South(ie Orlando and Jacksonville).
My budget more or less reflects the fact at I'm broke at the moment and no income. If it's not enough, that's fine. I really don't know what kind of money I'd need to put into this as I don't really know what tube amps run.
I'll probably end up with $300-500 in pedals. It'll depend on what I can find used.

Current game plan is to do small tours and tr to make connections once the album is finished while we wait for the drummer to finish college. After that if we have managed to get the ball rolling on something we'll put a few yeas into trying to make music work as a life style.

None of these are perfect for you but they are a start. I'd go for that Rockerverb combo on the high end and one of those Vypyr 60s on the low end. Or one of those JSXs.

Honestly I wouldn't really look at that closely replicating your studio experiences. When you mentioned studio I was expecting some boutique gear but Palomino is pretty much a $300 Vox AC30 knockoff and the Egnater is kinda Marshall-y I guess...
How about just getting a tweaker and an overdrive in front? You can run all the loop effects with your Boss ME.
The Vox Valvetronix might also be a good option. VT80 or 120:
http://www.voxamps.com/us/valvetronixplus/vtplus/

Make sure you get the controller pedal, that'll take care of pretty much everything you need.

If you can land one of the Vox Valvetronix used would also be a great deal - the original model also sounds fantastic and has a huge pedalboard controller to boot. Only downside there's a little switch lag but the Boss also has that.

The old 120 watter is especially cool as unlike the new ones you can save as many patches as you need as you would in a floor processor. Two foot controls when you add the footpedal with it. The other guitarist in my band has the head and it is still a very good amplifier, as close as I've heard modeling get to the real thing.

Some other amps to consider + your ME in the loop would be:

Peavey Valveking
Marshall Haze
Fender Hot Rod DeVille 212
Traynor YCV series
Crate Palomino
Carvin V3 or V3 Micro
Peavey JSX
Roland Jazz Chorus

Theres a guitar center in Ocala. not to far from gainsville. You could try out a lot of different setups
