I have my guitar tuned a half step down to adapt 10 Years' 'Daydreamer' to acoustic guitar.

The chorus follows the intro mostly so i think the progression just goes E-C-D.
I've been doing E and C pretty standard (x221xx and x32x1x respectively) but the D chords i've been trying don't sound right. Either sounds too happy or not powerful enough. I need a full voicing of the D chord that sounds like it belongs with the other two and isn't too hard to transition to.

I'm only about 4 months into teaching myself guitar so go lightly.

Any help is appreciated.
