So, for the first time ever, I'm looking into Marshall heads. Basically i'm trying to decide between the JCM 800 2203 re-issue and the JVM 210. I've heard the 210 has great distortion but lacks in clean and tone. I've listened to tons of vids on youtube for each amp but you know how it goes, can't really hear the amp unless you're in person.

NONE of my local music stores have an 800 or 210, ridiculous i know. They all either got the MA or DSL's. I play on mostly distortion, but here and there i get my cleans in.

Any insight and experience on the two amps that can be shared would be mucho appreciated. This head would be played in my bands, not my bedroom. I play in a hardcore band and a regular weezer ish type band.

Thanks!

Marshall JCM2000 DSL50/100 has the cleans, does the 800 tones and will do better higain than the JVM 210.

I've never actually played a DSL, just seemed to consistently hear bad things about it. But don't knock it till you try it right? I'll go try one out tomorrow

You hear bad things about them? There was one revision that had an underrated rectifier and would overheat (pretty easily fixed) but apart from that they're a fine amp. Even Gary Moore used them and he was the king of tone.

I'm talking about the JCM2000 DSL not the new DSL series Marshall is making. You would have to go used. They run $500-700 used in the USA

I don't remember where to find it, but in the Gear & Accessories forum there's a chart dedicated to the most popular Marshall amps. It compares the pros and cons of each. It's some amp buyer's guide sticky.

VH100R would probably be a good bet. I have no direct experience. I did find some DSLs and JSXs for someone else in the LA area recently. On the higher end of your budget you would be doing yourself a favor to look into Splawn Amplification. There are probably some other really good choices for you. Nice gear BTW. So you have a cab - do you prefer a head over a combo?

My opinion on the JVMs is that their distortion is kind of bland and contrived. Not my thing at all. Some of the recorded tones of the JVMs are good and I would def take a 205 over a 410 but they are just not for me. If you want lots of JVM love go to rig-talk or mylespaul.com

Can you tell me a little more about splawn? im not familiar at all with them.

I'll give you the quick run down and then a link to learn more as I'm getting ready to hit the sack.

(I see now you are looking more for heads, but I thought I'd post the combos I found as well - and Splawn makes a combo now called the Street Rod).

Splawn Amplification is based in Dallas, North Carolina is the brain child of Scott Splawn. Scott got his start modding Marshall amps to give them more gain and more flexibility. Then, he decided to make his own amps based off the Marshall design (like Freidman, Rhodes, Roccaforte, etc). Now he no longer mods Marshalls and strictly focuses on his own amps. There was a time there a few years back where his back order was about 4 months. I think it is a bit better than that now but he still has a very small staff (2 or 3 guys).

All of his headshells and cabs are made to order and made by him. He uses only the best components and the build quality is phenomenal. He also often answers the phone and email himself and is considered in the business as having top notch customer services. He has 6 or 7 amps now ranging from the Street Rod (lower gain) up to the Nitro (modern high gain). All of his amps are based off his original Quick Rod design. The Quick Rod is a 2 channel amp with separate EQs and channel volumes. The OD Channel has 2 levels of gain (OD1 and OD2) and 3 Gears (1,2 and 3). Gear 1 is based on Plexi, Gear 2 is based on a JCM 800 and Gear 3 is a super modded higher gain JCM 800. There is also a Solo boost. The OD's, Boost, and Channels are all footswitchable. His new footswitch includes a switch for the Gears as well. Somewhere in 2010 he improved the clean channel by adding a 4th preamp tube.

You can find them used starting at around $1,000.

Pros: They have a lot of mids
Cons: THey have a lot of mids

Here is the link. On post 4 are some of my favorite clips. Chris Peeler, Ola Englund, FastRedPonyCar, Carl Roa, Erock, BlackOZ and more all have good demos on youtube if you are interested.

No affiliation. I just happen to think they are one of the best tone/value ratio amps out there. If they are in a person's budget and they are looking for hot rodded Marshall tones I'll bring up Splawn. I don't bring Splawn up all the time.

I wouldn't have gone into that kind of detail without someone asking.

Hopefully you also recognize that I recommend all kinds of amps. I don't mind the criticism though. I can tone it down a bit

Splawn is not recommended much around here on UG so maybe I'm over-compensating

I have no affiliation with Marshall, but I recommend the JCMDSL100 for everyone. Im pretty sure the majority of my posts are recommending the DSL. lol. Buy the JCM DSL. Retube with some JJs or good NOS tubes, buy an Overdrive from ToyroomFX and your quest for great tone will be satisfied for a long time.

Buy a used Splawn and call it a day.

I have a pro mod amd Nitro. Both are kt88.

The quickrod is el34 and a little more classic Marshall sound.

Edit: 311 you really need a kt88 nitro. I am still in love with mine and i am going on three years. Not a common thing for me.
