So, on Saturday, my wife and I decided to take a trip down to GC (about a 40 mile drive) to check out a Seagull Dread they had in their used inventory. I wanted to try out a dreadnaught since my only other Acoustic is a Seagull Coastline Parlor and I wanted something with "Bigger" sound.

Anyhow, I got to the store, pulled the Seagull off of the wall and started strumming away to see how it and I would get along. Guitar sounded nice, no question there, but after a good 10-15 minutes of playing I knew it wasn't right for me. My arms didn't like and my wife even commented about how uncomfortable I looked.

They had a black cutaway with electronics in their used inventory as well which I also put through it's paces and still wasn't falling in love with it. Put it back up on the wall and started looking around for Grand Concert / 000 Body sized guitars with at least a solid top. Tried a Yamaha, Didn't bother with Fender CF140 since I'd played it earlier that day at my local shop and didn't care for it. Can't remember what else I tried but it was a few.

Then I spied the Martin Custom 000X1AE, Which quite honestly I'd never given any consideration because I knew what the sides and back are made of. Saw the price tag at $499, and said to myself, "Heck, I've never played a Martin but I like the sound, let's give it a try"

Upon close inspection, I really like the feel, smell and finish of the top. Hmm, my interest is going up. Sat down on a stool, in front of my wife, tuned up the guitar really quickly, Fretted a 4 Finger G Chord and gave it a firm strum.

My wife's head immediately snapped up and she said, "Ok, how much is this one going set us back" LOL. She knew from one strum this was the guitar I would end up buying. Here reaction to the difference in tone was a huge indication to me that this was a step down the right path in my search of a new guitar.

After playing a few of my favorite chord progressions and strumming patterns, I was fairly convinced as well but wanted to ask a few questions so I sought out the sales rep I was dealing with. He was surprised to see the Martin in my hand since I came in to look at Seagulls.

He explained to me a bit about the guitar's materials and then asked me if I wanted to hear it plugged in? Me, "Oh, it's got electronics?" He showed me the dials just inside the sound hole and got me plugged in to check that out. While I was playing a bit more, I said to him, "I guess I can't use my 15% off Coupon" to which he replied "Sure you can, if the code doesn't work I'll make it work"

Well what can I say, I liked the sound, look and feel of the guitar and I'm a sucker for a good deal. Needless to say I walked out with a Brand New Martin 000X1AE for $425 Plus tax.

Anyhow, I've seen a lot of good reviews on this guitar and a few people that have put this guitar down due to some of the materials used. I just want to say, next time you see one in a store, pick it up and give it a few strums. I think you'll be surprised at great sound it produces, not to mention the excellent value for your money.

Rock on,
Bruce Delaney

I'm assuming you like the Seagull Parlor, it looks like a cedar top. (?)

Yet you didn't like the Seagull dread, and bought the Martin.

That could do with a bit of splainin'.. (just for future references sake).

rest of the story as to why I got the Martin is in my original post... sorry the post was so long...

Yes I love my Seagull and yes it is a cedar top. I was quite dead set on buying the one you see my trying out until I realized I didn't care for the size of it.

Yah, if it was a Folk / GC / 000 size I probably would have taken it home... I love sunburst / honeyburst tops.
