i was playing with my friend whos been playing for 8 years and me 4 and i was doing a solo and he said i wasnt picking the hammerons and pull offs right . for example look at the stricken solo below

13p10-12p10-------13p10-12p10-------13p10-12p10-------13p10-12p10-----13p10-|
------------13p10-------------13p10-------------13p10-------------13p10-----|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

15p10-13p10-------15p10-13p10-------15p10-13p10-------15p10-13p10-----15p10-|
-----------13p10-------------13p10-------------13p10-------------13p10------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|

what i would do is pick the first 13p10 then just use my fingers for the 12p10 and the string above for the 13p10 whitou picking it and i dont pick the rest until i come to the 15p10. he says im supposed to pick each pull off but i dont. am i playing it wrong ? or is it just prefrence ? ive always played pulloff sequences like that . and sorry if my question sounds confusing a lil, im really tired and about to fall asleep .

That looks like exactly the way I've been doing it for years with no problems. I say screw the picking and just use hammers whenever possible. It might sound slightly more legato-ish, but otherwise put it down to personal preference. In a way you're 'cheating' the pattern by making it easier to play. No matter. I do things like that all the time and it sounds great.

Tell your friend that you're not playing anything wrong - just differently. Wrong in this case would be playing the notes incorrectly.

well, "wrong" is doing it any way other than how it was originally performed, if authenticity is the goal.

I'd say practice it both ways. You should be able to play all-legato phrases just as smoothly as legato/picking phrases. Don't let the all-legato become a crutch for insecure picking rhythm.

Hey, I'd suggest putting (# symbol in the editor) tags around tabs, like this:
13p10-12p10-------13p10-12p10-------13p10-12p10-------13p10-12p10-----13p10-|
------------13p10-------------13p10-------------13p10-------------13p10-----|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
----------------------------------------------------------------------------|
