I have a blackstar ht5 and its gain switch is stuck down. i bought some contact cleaner and should the amp be off and unplugged while i use the cleaner? im a total noob to valve amps...

also how long should i leave the amp off after using the contact cleaner (if i have to use it while the amp is off)?

Yes the amp should be off and unplugged.

I doubt cleaner is going to unstick the switch though

well if the switch is stuck the switch is most likely bad. The cleaner is to make the contact points better. It may help the switch work again, but don't hold your breath

spray a bit of the cleaner on a plate it something and see how long it takes for it to completely dry.

Deoxit works good but it is expensive. I have been using the Radio Shack electrical contact cleaner and I am happy with the results

just give it like ten mins to dry, I would, spray it, let it work in, spray again and try cycling the switch and then hit it with some compressed air so theres none pooled inside somewhere.

The switch physically won't move? On that new of an amp, I find it hard to believe that corrosion is the problem here. It probably got bumped and broken. Or does it move but not change anything?

I'm looking at a picture of an HT-5 right now and I don't see a gain switch -- maybe you meant the knob?

You're really not giving us much to go on here.

^^ I believe he is talking about the overdrive push-button. Or that is how I understood it

Ah. Well still, I can't see that much corrosion building up to the point where it stays stuck unless soda or something sticky was spilled on it, or if it was just bumped and broken.

No that's why I told TS that cleaner is probably not going to solve the issue. Sounds like the button is broke
