Been gassing for a Junior for quite a while. This one came up at the right price. I wasn't planning on buying one this good. I just wanted a bog standard Junior to thrash around on. Then I was browsing Andertons Friday and this came up. It's a Custom Shop Gibson Les Paul 1958 Reissue Junior in TV Yellow. Not sure on the year. My guess is 2012. I'll find out shortly.

I bought it because it's a no thrills (debatable), no nonsense rock machine. Plug in and rock. Yeah, it's not all that versatile due to the one pickup etc but we'll get to that in a bit.

Pulled it out of the cardboard box. Didn't bother lying the box down, just tried lifting it out. Man, I'm a dick sometimes. Dropped it straight away. Hadn't even laid eyes on the guitar and I dropped the ****er. It was in a hardcase but I was still shitting myself. I was scared to open the case. Luckily for me, no harm had come to it. Lesson learned.

First thing I notice when I picked it up, holy crap it's light. Very low 7lbs at a guess. Then I notice the neck. A 50's neck. Big and wide. But, not as big as I imagined. People go on about half a baseball bat, especially on Juniors. It's big, but comfortable. I have big hands anyway so it's a nice fit. Gunna take some getting used to. There's a lot more meat on it than my standard faded. As I mentioned, it's also pretty wide.

I always play it unplugged first. Very loud and very resonant. Two things I look for before I even plug it in. The Jr was both. Good start.

Headstock has vintage correct button tuners. Never been a fan but they work with this guitar. Neck we've discussed. Upper fret access. Just look at the pictures. Best upper fret access I've ever had. Pretty useful for someone that hardly goes past 8th fret, huh?
Single P90 pickup in the bridge. I was playing my Standard just before the Jr arrived. Unplugged the Standard and in with the Jr. Instantly noticeable difference. Not nearly as much gain.
Wrap around tailpiece. Not much to say. Top hat volume and tone controls each with bumblebee caps.

Construction wise, this thing is very basic. One piece mahogany body, one piece mahogany neck, one piece rosewood fretboard. I love that you can see the grain on the body. Tried to show this in the photos. The fretboard is a nice rich colour. Not as smooth as my standard but I've played that every day for two years. Finish is flawless. As you'd expect from a custom shop instrument.

The junior is second hand. However, I can't find a scratch. Seriously, I spent a while trying to find one. I just couldn't. However, there is an orange ish mark on the back. Not sure what this is from but it won't wipe off. Not bothered though.

Playability wise, I jumped straight in with my usual Zeppelin wannabe pentatonic wankery and everything just fit. Very natural to play and very easy. My only complaint is it needs thicker strings and a slightly higher action. I really dig in when I play and like something that fights back a bit.

Sound. Jesus. I can see why Keith Richards loves these thing. It's very midrangey and honky. Nasal if you like. More you dig in, the more honk you get. I set my Vintage Modern to a Guns n Roses kinda sound. On the guitar's volume, 1-2 was cleans, then 3 was pushing a bit of overdrive, 3-7 was AC/DC territory then the rest was a but more gain but not much more volume. Have the tone control rolled off and the volume wide open with a bit of gain and you almost have a neck pickup sound. However, all this changes just depending on how hard you play. It's so sensitive I love it.

As far as historical accuracy goes, the only thing they could do to make it even more accurate, is by using hot hide glue and a sleeveless truss rod. Neither of which I give a damn about. So, this is pretty true to an original 1958.

I've only had this guitar a few hours so I might come back and revise this next week or something, but this is basically my first impressions. So without further ado...

Hooray it's not an Epiphone!

HNGD!

That orange mark is a tone dilator. It dilates the tone. Add a leather strap and you've basically got a neck pickup.

awesome

are you sure you don't want to send it away so someone can take it apart and put it back together again with the proper hide glue? Only $1500? That's a bargain, surely...

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

So been playing it quite a lot. Quite a bit of neck dive. My leather strap should help with that. The only thing putting me off the guitar is the low action and thin strings.

For shredders yea. I like mine slightly below medium so you can get under the string for big bends.

Thanks guys. It's strange, because it's one got one pickup, I'm pretty confident in knowing what it can do already and I only got it yesterday. Gunna get my normal 10.5's tomorrow and slap those on. Raise the action a little bit and we'll be laughing.

Well it's practically new. Except the stain on the back. Not even any impressions from a plectrum on the scratch plate. Musta been kept in its case.
#23
Ah yea. Maybe he had loads of guitars. That's the problem with having lots, you never play any of them long enough to break them in.

I really want a Godin LGXT which will be my shreddy type guitar and I want a 58 or 52Telecaster but that really should be it.

I'm in no rush and I think that's too many. You really only need one humbucker and one single coil guitar, anything else is want.

Exactly. I actually find it quite hard to justify buying another guitar. Only other one I really want is a falcon. But that's a few years down the line yet probably. I've got to get a lot better before I can justify one of those.
#25
Ok. This guitar is making me play punk. It's just asking for it. Just bashing out You Really Got Me by The Kinks. I don't even like punk!

So you're not playing punk then lol?

Well, that's a punk song. And Dookie. Dookie is punk.

The big thing that sucks: I used to have a punk band with Billy Bragg's son. But I quit because I didn't like punk then. That was around two or three years ago. And they recently just played Glastonbury.

Proto punk, as they call it. But not 'punk'. It's 10 years too early!

I'd still very much class it as rock & roll. It's too... poppy and upbeat. But there's elements of it that the punk community seemed to adapt which is where the proto punk comes from, they were the forefathers. I've never classed Green Day as punk, but I love that album. Punk died in the 80's.

I'm very protective over punk, it's been abused by lots of shitty bands.

That's harsh, what are they called? I love Billy Bragg.

they're punk, they just pre-date the term.

which is funny because they wanted to be a blues band.
#37
They wanted to be a R&B band originally but they became a blues band through and through quite quickly because the musical tide had shifted from easy listening to more sex, drugs and war influenced music. The Stones wouldn't have survived if they hadn't moved into more rock orientated territory with all the other bands of the day.

They'd have been in the same category as Cliff Richard!

Proto Punk is what they call bands who had some elements of the bands that became punk.

So anti establishment, the DIY ethos, the drugs, the hair, some of the popular chord progressions etc.

Some bands had one individual aspect others had more. The Stones had the anti establishment; The drugs etc the Beatles did stuff like sitting in hotel rooms for peace or the Stones did Hyde Park and other free gigs which is DIY, or the Who smashed shit up etc. But predating? I wouldn't say any of them really had the whole punk package but there's definitely influence.

The Ramones, the Pistols, The Clash etc were the ones who broke the scene. They definitely were influenced by the Stones, the Kinks, Led Zep, the Beatles etc, but also by Ska and Reggae, lots of them maybe equally so.

I'm not even sure if you're serious lol.

I guess you're right, but I guess that because I listen to a lot of punk, the Clash, the Slits are among my favourite bands and the fact that people say;

'I love punk; Bowling for Soup, Blink 182, Green Day, Sum 41 are my favourite bands!' and couple that with the willingness to put Punk on every T-shirt leave me with a bitter taste in my mouth. It's not the bands that you like that I care about, it's the fact that the punk ethos is being lost to the commercialisation of it.

I just need to speak up for it. Some bands seem punky, but it's like Avril Lavigne sounding rocky. Pop Punk is a much better suited term, and I think you should be strict with it.

I should say that Green Day did start off quite punky, in ethos and all. And there are cool punk bands around, like Rancid etc.

It's anal, I know, but I'm a punk at heart.
